The small items (junk?) drawer

Not loose, and not a space hog. It works for me! Chef’s and paring knives, Laguiole steak knives, and regular cutlery all fit perfectly.

Me, too, at least the knives I use most. Cleaner overall, I think, than a block or magnet strip.

I’m going to be getting one of those drawer organizers for knifes - I’ve got all the good knives in a large drawer, arranged to be apart, but not ideal. I don’t want a block on the counter, nor a strip. Something to put on the order list.

IME, these “drawer blocks” can be found dirt cheap at thrift stores.

My true junk drawer is just that. Sharpies, pens, scotch tape, packing tape, floral tape, post it’s, stamps, extra corks from liquor or liqueur bottles for corking wine/Prosecco, etc. Stick matches and floral clippers. No kitchen gadgets there. There’s a drawer below that I use for wine openers, cocktail napkins, and a few cocktail accessories. Then there’s the usual gadget and implement drawer that has the plastic turners/spatulas, can opener, sharp paring knives, and measuring cups and spoons. On the counter a couple of containers for stuff used all the time, wooden spoons, rubber spatulas and spoonulas, whisks, pastry brushes, ladles, and scissors. Since I have multiples of most things, I’ve got extra measuring cups and spoons in the baking drawer, along with the pie plates, cake pans, loaf pans, and the rolling pins. I have more stuff in the baking basket in the pantry and 2 storage canisters that hold things I use less often, such as cookie scoopers, etc. In the silverware drawer, besides the silverware, I’ve got serving pieces, butter knives, cocktail forks, olive spoons, crab crackers, nut crackers, and that kind of stuff. All easy to find. Oh in the hot pad drawer, the trivets live and the long stick lighter for the gas grill.

I have one. I keep my lesser-used knives I. It, since I have no place to mount a magnetic strip and I don’t mind a knife block. The one that I have is multi-level and arranges so that it actually holds a lot of knives. My feeling is, everyone should use what works for them!

We had a house sitter here once when we were travelling and she took it upon herself to organize my kitchen drawers. I got home and found all my drawers divided up with those plastic dollar store organizer baskets, each one containing a SINGLE item - ONE corkscrew, ONE peeler, ONE spatula, ONE meat thermometer etc, etc., etc. I had a fit. I couldn’t find any of my stuff and I was slightly freaking out. Until I found all the rest, crammed into ziplock bags at the back of a cupboard. HOW THE HECK would she know what I liked to use? WHY did she think I had all those things if I didn’t actually need them? I mean, yes, some of it was redundant but that’s no one else’s business.

Nice person but we never had her back.

DH solved my measuring cup jungle by mounting a strip with nails aross the pantry window. I LOVE it! No more stacking or jumble. Easy grab.

“I keep my sharp knives… in their own 8-slot knife drawer organizer”…Me three! And our *open concept " kitchen doesn’t have walls for things like magnetic strips.

I try to keep my kitchen tools organized in particular spots so I always know where to go to get them. Maybe the only organizing principal I retain from parents very functional household. Still I have a lot of stuff and some of it more aspirational than used frequently. i do not mix in non kitchen/meal items with cooking stuff in these drawers. I have a knife block, same one for 40 years, vertical slots. No the knives dont get dirty and they are in reach. Three crocks with tools used at stove, (multiple nylon and metal spatulas, silicon spatulas, spoons, strainers and whisks) behind the cooktop. two large drawers with dividers for miscellanea. Everyday silver and a few key items, including drinks related in one small drawer. Every so often I go through a throw out the what did I buy/why did he give me that items.

This is how my other half used to “straighten up” this way: throw all the loose items into a Ziploc and put that somewhere. I called them “chronological storage”. So there would be a bag with a couple of paper clips, a pair of scissors, three rubber bands, some chewing gum, a pack of tissues, two smaller bags, and a couple of AA batteries. I, on the other hand, alphabetized my spices for decades.

Sounds a lot like my setup.

I have a drawer that is nothing but bottle stoppers. Sometimes old bottles have degraded cork stoppers. More times that I want to think about, I have resorted to pushing the broken cork in when attempting to open a fresh bottle. Then filter the contents through a coffee filter and pour it back into the rinsed bottle with a new stopper. Hopefully a synthetic stopper so this doesn’t happen again with this bottle

I’m not 100% sure what’s this is about, but so-called “trial corks” (aka T-corks) are cheap, plentiful and convenient for still wines and spitits. Good for lots of other things, too, like vinegars, oils, etc. Synthetics tend to last longer than do natural cork.

Most homebrew supply places carry them.
