The Latest on PFAS Isn't Good

Well, a good reason to be grateful I’m An Old. Sadly, my non-use of nonstick seems not to matter at all, considering how pervasive the chemicals are in everything. Even dental floss !

Wahine tells me one of the worst sources for PFAS intake is apparently the thermal printing ppaker used for receipts.

It is all about balance, right? The advantage of flossing trumps the disadvantage of flossing.

I think regular floss is fine. It’s the Glide version that’s bad.

I used to have a fax machine that used thermal paper. Decades ago …

Yeah. But that’s what the dentist gives me. I got the regular and it shredded. What happened to “waxed”?

Bet you don’t have any readable faxes on that paper any longer…

True dat. Not known for archival quality. But all that stuff has long since been pitched. I remember in the day getting spam faxes …

Or use a Water Pik.

Same here… He also gave me these new picks called “TePe”. I tried them and went back to the glide floss.

I do, and my dentist said Water Pik is not as good as a floss (She asked if I toss everyday, I said… I use Water Pik everyday…etc)

I have one. I end up washing the walls with it. I wonder if it can be repurposed as a cat discipline tool. :joy_cat:

I use it on pretty high pressure and try to get the gums as well as the gaps. My dentist is ok with it.

Interesting and thanks for posting it. If anyone is interested, here’s a link to the actual study itself. It always bugs me when news websites report about a study but fail to link its publication.

The numbers/results aren’t large and the CIs are pretty wide, but still it’s disturbing:

  • By a 1-unit increase in the WQS index, combined maternal PFAS exposure was associated with lower sperm concentration (−8%; 95% CI: −16%, −1%), total sperm count (−10%; 95% CI −17%, −2%), and a higher proportion of nonprogressive and immotile sperm (5%; 95% CI: 1%, 8%) in the young men. Different PFAS contributed to the associations with varying strengths; however, perfluoroheptanoic acid was identified as the main contributor in the analyses of all three outcomes despite the low concentration.

All this effort to eliminate these types of things from our lives and the navy does this. We’re (Oahu) screwed. https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2022/12/12/families-demand-transparency-answers-after-red-hill-groundwater-samples-detect-forever-chemicals/

More good news about PFAS:

What is the RDA of toxic forever chemicals, I wonder.

Well, just wait. Ohio Republicans succeeded in defining natural gas as a source of green energy, so maybe there’s a place for PFAS in good dietary health.

i saw that. Next, coal is an essential mineral!
