The Good News Thread In The Age of Corona

I’m usually a news junkie but I’m also now limiting how much I watch. Obviously everything is about the crisis and there really is just a limit to how much I need. Generally, I’ve been watching the daily government press conference but that’s about it. I yearn for the return of “proper politics” - those days when our news was nothing but Brexit seem so far away now.

I saw an assumed homeless person working their street corner for donations in a mask and gloves. Suburban Houston.

The Wifeacita likes the local news and I’ll tolerate it, happy Wife happy life, but it’s pretty much murders, car wrecks, and fires.

The corona is obviously number one now pushing fires to the backburner so to speak unless a chemical plant or refinery has an explosion which does happen.

My town of Houston is an energy and seaport dynamo with the largest medical center in the world, let’s hope we get some good research.

I center here but not for medical reasons. For Boba reasons.

That picture does no justice, the Med Center is like a medium size city.

Didn’t realize Houston has the largest med center in the world, so thanks for the edification. City of my birth - St Joseph’s hospital. Think I may have mentioned it before. May explain my deep and abiding love for the south. Early childhood imprinting. And damn, those deviled crabs I had there were fantastic!

Well, you can. It’s just that it’s usually posted on The Onion as satire.

And sorry about your uncle, but I understand the desire to not want to gather at a funeral.

Ditto that. I’m limiting my TV to the local and evening news, usually between 5:30 and 7 p.m., unless there’s yet another press conference briefing which is often a bunch of talking heads vs. scientific fact coming from those who are in the know. Then I’ll flip it off or mute until the regular news comes on.

Thanks for your condolences @LindaWhit; just trying to keep my dad alive a few more years. He has a pretty good quality of life, still lives independently and is in love with his girlfriend. There’s only so much I can do though…

Apparently, people are putting teddy bears in their windows so children out strolling with their parents can spot them. I just found out about it yesterday, and this afternoon I heard a little voice say “no bears yet!”. So I grabbed my Grateful Dead dancing bear doll and held it out the window. The mom recognized it immediately.

It’s really a great, lighthearted and fun concept for the bored little ones. Will have to find the kids’ stuffed bears and put them in all the front windows. Don’t have anything so cool as a GD dancing bear tho, but might be able to fashion a hula or tiki bear…I’ll skip the masked Corona bear however, lol :joy_cat::joy_cat:

My news has turned to about 2 minutes of watching. I’m just keeping to date with the local Face book news

In the UK, kids are being encouraged to paint rainbows and put them in the window.

I have no stuffed animals so I staked my 500 pound pet Grizzly Bear out in front of my house. I heard so many squeals of delight…

This is absolutely, totally brilliant. You have to watch it and pass it on. No, really. watch it now.

Apparently it was only for a week but there’s certainly no reason not to keep it going. It’s a great idea.

The Dancing Bear, not in the window because I couldn’t get a good shot.

Yep. My neighborhood asked us to put bears in for a search yesterday (Mon., March 30). But I’m keeping them up for the duration, especially since the weather here is gray/rainy/chilly and folks may not have taken the kids out. Tomorrow I plan to swap out the bears for some stuffed Easter bunnies.

And yes, I do know how ridiculous it is that a grown woman has stuffed animals. But the one bear is a wine holder and the other is a music box that sings “Love You Teddy Bear.” The Easter bunnies? Just cute seasonal decorations. I also have a stuffed Eeyore (don’t ask; it’s sentimental) that I may sneak into a little-seen window for the new neighbors’ kids.

Can you eat cakes for example, or things that contain eggs?

I overdose myself with news from several countries, and it is interesting to see the different strategies on dealing with same issue by different countries.
