Thanksgiving 2024

Butterball Turkey Breasts on sale for $.99/pound this week. I grabbed one at 6:00am when the store opened.

It’s just the two of us, so a 4.5 pound turkey breast will be more than enough for Thanksgiving.

I’m not sure what I am impressed by more - that you found a turkey for that cheap or that you were grocery shopping at 6:00 am :grinning:

I need to do that. My experiment on Monday demonstrated to me that just serving turkey thighs will NOT fly with my picky ass family.

I’m with you. I NEED leg quarters, and others NEED the white meat.

I was worried that they would sell out. There were only about 20 Turkey Breasts in the case and I’m sure they will sell out quickly.

That’s a good deal if those are your desired T-day menu items.

New to me: turkey in the Big Green Egg.

Already ordered a turkey - using an online vendor this year offering heritage turkey. But my new headache is a niece who’s started a vegan diet this year. She only breaks vegan for real butter, so she’ll be ok with the veggie sides. Need to think of something vegan that will work for her.

I was pescatarian for a year, and it was a tempting crispy piece of turkey skin at Thanksgiving that was the first step to me falling off that wagon. :joy: The 2nd and final step, a few months later , was visiting an Aunt who had made me meatballs for lunch on her farm in rural Canada, where I was staying. I didn’t have the heart to tell her I didn’t eat meat, there was nothing else to eat, and they looked good. :joy:

I had a second chapter of pescatarianism that ran for 18 months in my thirties, which ended with some lamb souvlaki.

Re: eating meat … I think it’s easier to abide by “almost never.”

For health and other reasons, I’m about 90% veg now. Oh how I miss good quality salami and tomato sandwiches, prosciutto. I did eat one delicious bacon and tomato sandwich this summer.

I find never works better for me than almost never for most things I am trying to restrict.

I’m really bad at moderation.

I am not currently trying to be pescatarian or vegetarian because I am more focused on trying to keep my salt and carbs down. I eat too many carbs and too much dairy once I take away meat, poultry and seafood.

I have been ordering more vegetarian meals when I’m dining alone, and I usually eat meat/ poultry/fish once a day, and have vegetarian/ egg/ dairy for the other meals or snacks .

drool I wish I were better with frying at home, because I would definitely make those! I love mushrooms any way, but those look amazing.

I’m no pro when it comes to frying and these were really easy. Here is the guidance small_h posted on the October WFD thread and which I followed using oyster mushrooms that were cut so that they were relatively flat and could be shallow fried.

Still dithering about a Thanksgiving menu. Just 4 of us and I signed up for an early AM turkey trot on Thursday. So I’m thinking I’ll make curried onions and green chili corn casserole Wednesday evening, trot in the AM, then come home, bake the sides, put turkey breast in the oven, and make mashed potatoes. Dessert is going to be store bought pie and ice cream, the latter of which spouse can procure when he goes to pick up my mom in the AM.

We are so lucky to be invited to our friends’ house again this Thanksgiving (which also gives me a chance to practice with my band for our December gig, as we otherwise wouldn’t come back up from Philly until just before our show ).

One of our hosts’ former grad students is always bragging about what a fantastic cook he is, and he’s promised a buffet of Indian delights.

Not traditional by any means, but we’re looking forward to it.
