Shiner, Texas

President George W. Bush went there on 9/11 escorted part of the way with f16s from the 111 FIS of the Texas Air National Guard fully armed.

This was his old air guard unit. Say what you will about W but he flew single engine f102s not exactly the most reliable fighter around.

There have been at least five fighter crashes in the last two months.

Wow, beautiful floor! Did you sand it yourself? If so, are you a hobbyist or professional?

The account of that was absolutely riveting @jcostiones!

@Jaymes - the floors are looking wonderful, and your entire house looks like a little slice of heaven - hope you enjoy many happy years there!

BTW - love this thread, it’s bringing back memories. I grew up on SAC bases, dad flew B-47’s. I vividly remember the Cuban Missile Crisis. We had an underground missile base close by. I was 8 or 9 maybe, and the air raid sirens went off day and night. Dad sat beneath the wing of his plane for days, ready to go if needed. The nuclear clock did indeed almost reach midnight. Thank god it didn’t come to that…

Also, my dad knows how to Dutch Oven cook too, but he passed the oven itself on to me. I’ve got a DO cookbook, will have to read up. Everything tastes great, cooked that way IMO. I’ll have to pick his brain a little about techniques.

Hired a fellow who is like “the” floor guy in Shiner. Beautiful job, no?

The first two are correct. I always liked crossing the Colorado, nice and green unlike the muddy Brazos.

Oh wait, of course the Comal and the Guadalupe (insert correct pronunciation here) how could I forget? The only 2 I’ve been in.

Of course, not, but nice try.

I always cross the Brazos at Waco. I’m safe when I reach San Antone.

Ha! I just remembered your I-10 West phobia. So following the circuitous route you must take to get there, I’ll change my answer to:

Brazos
Colorado
Rio Grande
Amazon and finally
Pecos.

What do I win?

I have three memories of Highway 71 to Austin.

The Wifeacita and I saw a herd of Longhorns. Contrary to popular belief they are not on every street corner next to the oil wells. I can count on one hand the times I’ve seen a herd.

No NDW seeing Bevo a million times does not constitute a herd.

A friend of mine and I saw the end of a rainbow in a field. The stupid leprechaun absconded with the gold before we could shoot it. This is Texas after all.

High school girlfriend and I were heading to Paleface Park, Hippie Hollow for a weekend of camping. Clothing is optional but strictly discouraged.

We’re driving on 71 and both are overwhelmed by raging hormones.

What follows isn’t our fault.

We couldn’t take the torture anymore so we pulled off into a field.

We might have removed some clothing and something might have happened on the trunk, since it was broad daylight others could have seen this. Oh well.

You win nothing. It’s the Nile, not the Pecos. Everybody knows that. The Pecos does have a nice high railroad bridge and marvelous scenery.

I love West Texas.

Paleface, (now called Pace Bend Park) and Hippie Hollow are on opposite sides of the lake. It’s no wonder you didn’t make it.

Oh wait. … You did. In the trunk!

You corrected me before on this and I don’t know where we were but there were no clothes.

To get to Wied I take Alternate 90 and might grab some BBQ at Galvans in Richmond plus catch a few trains.

I’m hankering for Jaymes to report back or I’ll spill the beans about the last three rivers.

I’ll give some obscure hints. One can be mistaken as a rescue animal. The other two are rios hermanas, sister rivers. Again, all names are Spanish origin.

On, in is disgusting.

Don’t wait for me. I’m not a native Texan & don’t have a clue.

I’m going be driving back to Katy in a couple of weeks and I’ll take notes. But ‘til then…got nothin’.

By popular demand:

Brazos De Dios
Colorado
San Bernard
Navidad and sister river
Lavaca
