Seasonal fruit ideas

I’m making ambrosia with sour cream tonight.

Strawberries and blackberries appear to be back, I assume from the southern part of the state, although this place is known for supporting local farmers.

On the last of the Meyer lemon posset!

Did you try the sweet lime yet @shrinkrap?

I did, but as juice. I think it’s good as a mixer, (with Crystal light :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:), too mild for posset. I haven’t tried eating it “out of hand”.

Blood oranges!

Sorbet might be nice, but that’s a lot of work! So far adding it to be beverages.

those look rather pithy for blood oranges - is the flavor good?

Curious: are they still called blood oranges in your neck of the woods, or have they moved to calling them “raspberry oranges” for shoppers who are easily offended?

@mig I was wondering if the skin varied with variety; I think these might be moros. I’m no expert but as a beverage flavoring they taste good to me! I have not tried it by itself.

These are from a patient of husbands who volunteered that they are larger than grocery store versions. Maybe they have been on the tree for awhile. It’s certainly been unusually hot and dry this month.

@linguafood , she referred to them as blood oranges. I don’t think home growers are thinking about “shoppers” but I think they are still called blood oranges in the places that sell them around here.

Here’s a link comparing six types of blood oranges.

This cardamom and blood orange sorbet from the Diana Henry COTM looked good!

Perfect; Any guesses on how many oranges make 2 cups juice? These don’t seem that juicy.

This version includes some helpful notes.

It really, really varies. Typically, 3 to 4 medium oranges lead to one cup of juice.

So, I would say 8 to 10 not too juicy blood oranges or Moro oranges for 2 cups of juice.

Thank you!

I’ve been buying less-common citrus when I see it at the market, so recently I’ve made bergamot liqueur, candied citron, and kumquat-infused rum.

Do you have any specific cocktails in mind for that kumquat rum?

Makes a mighty fine mojito!

I bet!

That all sounds amazing! I’ve never found bergamot fresh, but I live in hope.

I don’t recall seeing it before, but when I walked by a basket of them at the market, I immediately doubled back. I don’t think I’d seen citrons, aside from Buddha’s hand, either.

Turned out well, although I don’t think I taste the cardamom.
