Sardines?

Canned sardines are a delicacy in Portugal. The country has a long fish-canning tradition, to the point that the sardine has become a national icon. We visited Conservas Pinhais, one of the oldest preserving factories in Portugal, that has kept its artisanal canning method since 1920. It makes 30,000 cans a day.

I love Portuguese sardines, especially the spicy ones.
Today, I was in Eden Center and had a Banh mi, I asked for spicy sardines. It was great.
Not interested in the sardines in tomato sauce.
My favorite is Tome spicy sardines in olive oil , also have to include Nuri spicy sardines in olive oil
Also have to include Flower brand spicy sardines from Morocco which I can not get somehow around the DC metro area but it is available from Ca.
I love it with some rice , makes. a perfect meal.

My father used to eat “sardine salad” made of sardines from tiny cans mixed with mayo, on saltines. I seem to remember it quickly turned black.
Portugal was a revelation!

No fresh options on my coast. But they were a treat when we were traveling through California

I buy canned sardines. Prefer with skin and bones. Eat them straight up or sometimes with a squirt of sriracha or splash of evoo.

I asked my Mom for “CYDINES” when I was 4 years old. She would serve me a sandwich of Wonder bread, butter and King Oscar sardines in olive oil. She would mash them up in a bowl, butter the bread and spread some sardines on top and close it up with another piece of bread, then cut my sandwich in 4 pieces.

We drizzle our canned sardines with lemon juice. Used to give my cat the spine.
I drizzle grilled fresh sardines with lemon, too.

My friend’s family in Barbados makes a special treat. Mashed canned sardines topped with old Cheddar, on a toasted English muffin, melted. Like a take on a tuna melt.

I now like them on white toast with some lemon as well.

Just received one case of 50 tins of spicy sardines in olive oil from Ca. They are from Morocco, and will do although my favorite so for as Tome from Portugal . They are spicy , used to be able to by from Asian store for $1.25 but somehow it was discontinued. I paid $79,00 for a case delivered to 20639 from Ca. If anyone is interested, the shipping cost was $24.00 so each tin cost 1.10 . It sells art the asian stores. in Ca for $1.25 if you are in Ca. Really great with rice or perhaps crackers and in sandwich. Ir recently had a spicy sardines in a Banh mi which reminded me about this so, googled and found the store that sells it wholesale . The manager was wiling to send me one box of 50 instead of one pallet of 50 boxes!

50! You need to like it a lot.

I do, with rice
Costco only carries the one that are not spicy
these are the spicy ones in olive oil with vegetables
the olive oil is so flavorful with rice!
try it and you will like it
I tend to buy bulk esp when I cannot find it in stores so, might as well buy in large quantity

Never tried this with rice. Anything else you put on it?

I do have a caper, sardines, bread crumbs pasta recipe that is nice and is one of my go-tos for when I don’t want to spend too much time cooking.

Remember that accident from a few years ago of that driver who was stuck off the side of a road and wasn’t easily spotted by other drivers? S/He had to subsist off hot sauce packets or something like that. Emergency sardines might be the protection we all need in the future.

I love it. My winter driving kit came with some hard candies. Sardines and crackers would have been better.

Looks really nice, and I hope to try it my next time opening a tin. My usual for Sardines-n-Triscuits is just mashing with S&P and some of the packing oil, but this looks so much more interesting.

Re accidental deletions, I tried to mention (then tested and found out it failed) that you should be able to un-do a deletion. Except that function (as I just found out) seems to be kaput!
