Removing Brussels sprouts from the stalk?

Question: We received a large stalk of Brussels sprouts in our CSA share. Will the sprouts stay fresher if I remove them from the stalk, or should I leave the sprouts on the stalk until ready to use? Or does it not make much of a difference either way?

I am storing the stalk in the fridge until I use the sprouts.

I don’t know the answer, though I’ll guess leaving them on the stalk.

BUT. I stopped by to say — the inside of the stalk is edible!

leave them on the stalk as long as possible.
when snapped off the stalk, the ‘path to drying out / wilting’ becomes much shorter - stem end to “dry” vs. stalk length to “dry”

as one snaps off the individual sprouts / aka roses (German “Rosenkohl”) one needs a biggie knife to chop off the stripped stem, so it is easier to ‘store’

storing the stem&sprouts wrapped up in the plastic bag ala ‘from the store’ also reduces the dehydration un-nice tendency . . .

@Saregama, thanks for that tip about the inside of the stalk. I did not know it was edible.

@HappyOnion, now I’ll have to find a bag in which to store the Brussels sprout stalk. The person at the CSA simply handed it to me, as it was too long to fit inside the reusable tote they use. That stalk is about 3 feet long.

ISTR that on CH, a 'hound opined that a split Brussels sprout stalk looked like how they imagined the inside of human penis looking. To which I asked, “GREEN?”

FTR, I have always stored them on the stalk until ready to cook, although I have to cut the stalk in half to get it into the fridge.

Yep, I had to do exactly this.

And that description of the inside of the sprout stalk :joy:

. . . 3 feet long . . .

okay, you got the ‘real deal’ - storing it ‘wrapped/bagged’ can be an issue - but definitely worth ‘solving’
