Ended up at Black Bird again. Friend wanted to try the rhubarb bostock. I didn’t try anything. Bostock went well especially if you like rhubarb
Zeppole di San Giuseppe wt Noctua. $4.50.
This Zeppole di San Giuseppe was more like a French Cruller than a cream puff. It was filled with some custard. It’s on the small side. Very nice.
Other breads and pastries at Noctua today.
Fika was sold out of kannelbullar that I often purchase for a friend.
I picked up some personal-sized apple galettes at Blackbird, which he liked very much.
This is photo from Blackbird, which resembles what I purchased. What I purchased was a smaller version of this, around 4 inches across.
Yeah I somehow can’t enjoy desserts from Black Bird. I enjoy their breads but desserts are lost on moi. I have tried a fair bit but can’t seem to like them. Ah well each their own
I didn’t try the apple galette. My dining companion liked it. I have liked the blackbird lemon tart in the past, but I haven’t purchased one in 5 years.
I had been pretty loyal to Emmer from 2020-2023. I’m currently turned off by the prices and the lines. I go when there are no lines, and often most of the interesting items are gone.
Noctua, Bricolage, Cafe Bélem, Dough Bakery on Danforth (which is more traditional Canadian-style in terms of selection, than European-style ) some specific items at Ba Noi (some are not great ) and some specific items at Bakery Pompette, have become my most frequented bakeries.
I am not eating many sweets at the moment. The Zeppole from Noctua is the only sweet pastry I ate over the weekend. In terms of my own consumption, I’ve been getting bread. sandwiches or quiche at most bakeries, savoury Asian buns at Ba Noi and Bricolage, tostas at Cafe Bélem. The sweets I purchase are usually for my dining companions.
I quite like the chocolate corks and the canelé at Blackbird. Those are my main go-tos there for desserts.
I am one ecstatic Chocolate lover today!!
What a find!!..and in, of all places, - ’ Yummy Market '!!
Now, no need to head over to CLUIZEL, Rue Saint Honore, Paris 75001 for my favorite chocolate treat!
At a whopping $11, this midget 2.46 oz bar of " Arcango Grand Noir 85%" is so complex, flavorful and F$$*^$@ing!!! good!!
Worth every cent!
BTW, FYI:
Michel Cluizel (Renamed The Manufacture Cluizel in 2013) is considered to be the finest of French chocolate makers, if not in the world, and has earned the title, the goldsmith of chocolate.
“ AMADEUS, Boulangerie & Pâtisserie; Bathurst St., Thornhill “
Revisiting this once favorite but sadly neglected ( due to the emergence of DUO ) neighbourhood bakery after an ultra, decade-long hiatus!
Wow! Wow! Wow! What an incredible transformation! Totally unrecognizable from my last visit! The current, huge retail area, adorned with crystal chandeliers, modern chrome displays and contemporary multi-color wall lighting and murals, combined to create a gorgeous space packed with Parisian/Big Apple vibe.
The visually captivating and mouth-watering array of artisan baked breads, cakes, Viennoise and pastries are more than impressive. Some uncommon and unique creations like ‘ St. Honore Croissant ‘ and ‘ Croissant dotted with Passion fruit and mango bits ‘ were amongst the stunning displays!
For this initial visit and playing it safe, I bought a handful of the following to try ( and compare with my current favorite - DUO ): Pain au Chocolat, Almond Croissant, Red Velvet and Dark Chocolate.
First off, the price point of the two are pretty similar. Appearance-wise, IMO, Amadeus offers slightly larger size products whilst most DUO’s creation and finishing are more dainty, refined and sophisticated. Viennoise from both places are equally crispy, light, flaky and fluffy though DUO’s offerings are more Parisian like and have a much more pronounced and gorgeous buttery aroma! As for the dessert pastries? Taste profile of Amadeus’s creations, though attractive and enjoyable, is a touch on the sweet side…. maybe more suitable for the Western palate? On the other hand, the degree of sweetness of most DUO’s products are more toned-down.
Verdict!..Amadeus products are definitely a pleasure to eat, however, though good, IMHO, DUO creates slightly more superior and delightful products!
Picked up a whole coconut cream pie from scaramouche for a birthday bash. Should go well will report back either way
Since you were in Montreal, I thought you might have picked up a cake or two from this place?!
On the list for Montreal. Nice post.
Nice bombarded for next trip I did pick a couple of donuts from 49th parallel (lucky donuts is their sister brand I think) that went well
I did this for my wife’s birthday a few years ago. It was much enjoyed by the both of us.
Yeah agree with this coconut pie. It went so well I have been asked to bring it for the next occasion. Too bad they don’t offer takeout delivery would make life easier. Their lobster set menu caught my eye when picking up might give it a try
I need that.
We’re going back to Wynona next week.
’ DUO, Richmond Hill ’ - Trying out another creation from owner/head pasty chef, Eric.
Crunchy, chewy Dark Chocolate and Hazelnut shell with hazelnut cream and orange jello bits filling.
A touch overly sweet but the refreshing citrus
Hazelnut cream filling managed to strike a fine balance with the rest of the sweeter components. When eaten together made each bite a most enjoyable one.
BTW, inflation has caused almost all individual pastry pieces to cost over $10 now!!
Have you tried their honey twist? Crispy, flaky and soft layers with just enough sweetness. If you like croissant type pastry, you’ll like those.
I actually prefer the other option ’ 8 ’ . Similar to the Honey Twist but with added custard where the two ‘holes’ are!
Their new ’ fresh peaches ’ Danish is mighty fine too!
