Recommended Desserts Toronto & GTA

BTW, FYI, this is an extremely complex dessert, in terms of taste profile. Just the ’ jello part ’ alone consisted of a mix of ultra-fragrant, passion fruit, grapefruit and peach components. The content has morsels of tangy-bitter grapefruit, sweet peaches and red berries…to name a few of the identifiable ones!..creating a nice textural profile!

We did try one pastry, forgot what it was but it was good. It was quite crowded so they’re doing well. Frankly, there are so many good pastry/bakeries shops in town nowadays, it’s all a haze with no one especially standing out. They are worth trying out due to they have more variety than most others.

Thanks! I’ll check it out when it opens. It’s a short 5 min walk from my crib.

Amadeus
Picked up the hazelnut meringue cake (dairy free) for a birthday. Went well as a lot of restrictions were met. Might become a spot to pickup cakes last minute. Birthday person wanted to order from Pastel but they were so busy that couldn’t place an order on Wednesday

Was asked to order something for an office party at friend’s workplace event got a small box of biscotti and Amarettis(there are always some gluten free folks at an office)
Went very well. Since I had the delivery at my place I was allowed to keep a few (I am very partial to the pistachio Amaretti)
Enjoying them today

Today’s trip was to Castle and coal
Slim pickings as very little left plus the place was packed
I tried the gallete de rois (9$ per slice) decent and worth trying.
Gallete de rois seems to be trending as even spotted it at Laduree in Yorkville (maybe I misread as it looked like 17$ a slice!) needless to say I just walked away as rather go to Cafe boulud nearby around that price point

Forgot to report on flippers Japanese pancakes I tried recently on the Elm Street location. Quite good and imo better than fuwa fuwa as don’t have that eggy flavor as well. Priced higher than fuwa fuwa but worth it

Laduree added a vanilla eclair to repertoire so ended up getting it for a visit to friends. Went very well. They don’t seem to offer delivery from Yorkdale anymore so selection is getting limited.
Picked up a pain au chocolate hmmm not so good at that price

Guests brought over pistachio babka bread from Amadeus bakery nearby on Bay and Cumberland. A crowd filler I guess a it’s still less than 2 pistachio croissants at Emmer!

I guess I can also post not recommended desserts here as well.
Ordered the Kunefe Pistachio Chocolate box from cafe pastel as had guests who wanted to try it out.
I personally wasn’t too keen but obliged. Hmmm not good imo overly sweet and dense though expected with the viral Kunefe Pistachio Chocolate making the rounds. Expected from that regional penchant for desserts that of this style. I could barely finish quarter of the cake box of my share

:frowning: disappointing. Definitely let people know when pastries and cakes don’t cut the mustard.

Got the viral ‘Dubai’ style chocolate from someone who bought it in Ridgeway plaza. Way better than Pastel version and this is mass produced. I wish they had used dark chocolate (or maybe brought the dark chocolate version) quite rich and filling. Mind you it’s an acquired taste so not for every taste profile. Guests enjoyed it a lot I am ok for now till I try the dark chocolate version

Ok got around to trying the le Bisou today hmm I would say Les Moulins Lafayette level (now closed) I would suggest try while they have a promo. Paris brest is ok not Le Genie level for sure. Eclair is serviceable

Hmmm another trip to Black Bird I didn’t like their dessert in the past so similar experience here. I enjoy pear desserts so picked up chausson very hard center with pear not cooked properly. Guests liked their apple galette I didn’t even bother trying.

I think Blackbird has gone downhill over the past 7 years. I don’t buy too much from them anymore. I was a fan in 2015.

I am also shopping at Emmer less frequently lately, because it has become too expensive for what it is. I mostly am happy with their baked goods. Some of their lunch sandwiches are mediocre. I like their breads.

I am happy with Harbord Bakery’s challah, carrot cake, and blintzes.

I am happy with the savoury buns at Banoi. Skipping the butter tarts lately because of the sugar.

I, myself, am not eating much refined sugar these days. I mostly buy treats weekly for other people.

I am happy with Rahier, Bricolage, Café Bélem, the sunshine buns and kannelbullar at Fika Coffee Shop in Kensington, and Bakery Pompette.

When I cross over the Don River, I like Dough Bake Shop, Gerrard St Bakery, and Le Conciliabule a lot.

Noctua is my favourite place in the Junction.

I like Fantail on Roncy.

I spotted a fresh looking Tarte Tatin at Le select bistro today (we went for brunch) it’s designed for a group and others didn’t want to indulge. This being one of my fav desserts just curious if someone else has tried it.
