A huge (nearly a billion pounds) recall of US prepared chicken products today.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 9, 2024 – BrucePac, a Durant, Okla. establishment, is recalling approximately 9,986,245 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry products that may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The ready-to-eat meat and poultry items were produced from June 19, 2024, to October 8, 2024. These products were shipped to other establishments and distributors nationwide then distributed to restaurants and institutions. Information regarding product labels and the list of products will be provided when available.

The products subject to recall bear establishment numbers “51205 or P-51205” inside or under the USDA mark of inspection.

They link to a list of the product labels. Trader Joe’s, 7-11, and Wegmans are affected.

Thank you for posting.

Holy cow as to the extensiveness of that product listing that their meats went into.

Also kind of LoL at the writer using the word “approximately” then not just rounding up to “nearly 10 million”. Or even just rounding the terminal to “250”.

It is remarkable how concentrated and hidden food production is here in the US. I’ve never heard of BrucePac before.

I miscounted. It’s nearly 10 million, not a billion.

USA Today has a text list of the products, so you don’t have to wade through 325 pages of labels.

I received this email and photo from Trader Joe’s which is related to BrucePac products as well:

The amount of recalls from TJ’s sure makes one think.

I had a very good friend who lived in Yonkers, NY (who unfortunately passed away in 2021) who refused to shop at TJ’s because of that very reason. I don’t buy a lot there, but if I did, it would make me think, too!

I rarely buy any of their prepared foods / ready-to-eat stuff, so I’m not too worried.

Cooking mostly from scratch may not be as convenient, but you have better quality control

E. Coli outbreak in McDonalds’ burgers. No recalls yet, though.

something i wasn’t aware of is that symptoms of e coli poisoning usually start three to four days after swallowing the bacteria. scary stuff.

I think that can be true for most food poisoning bugs, though. It’s almost never the case that you eat lunch and feel sick in the afternoon.

Despite 8000 Yelp posts claiming exactly that.

TJ’s is subject to ag biz supply chain, like all grocery stores. I’ll still shop at TJ’s because it does the recalls voluntarily and they also have a list of ingredients they will not allow in their products from suppliers. IsTJ’s perfect, nope, no way…but a good job of keeping junk of their products and they provide very good value. They also provide an alternative to the huge supermarket chains that keep wanting to merge into a MEGA-MONSTER corporation…which screws the consumer. I also stay away from TJs prepared foods or ready to nuke frozen stuff.

TL;DR ….

Synthetic colors, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, MSG, HFCS, partially hydrogenated oils, GMO products.

it’s been around 40 years ago now, but i use to have a friday night entertainment routine with a friend where we would walk downtown (Indianapolis) checking out the scene while talking to lucy in the sky. on one of the friday adventures my friend started complaining of stomach pains a few hours into our wandering around. it got so bad that i wanted to take them to the hospital but that never happened because of our altered states. my friend concluded that the chili they ate earlier that day was the cause. i still remember them saying “i knew i should have figured something was up with the chili when the dog wouldn’t even eat it”.

Wow! No MSG or HFCS in any TJ’s products?

Color me impressed.

Then there is the frozen waffle recall/notification of a few days ago…made by Treehouse and sold under many names, just about everywhere.
