It may be lowbrow, but I really enjoy the one at Trader Joes. It totally scratches the itch and cost about $13. Full size.
The 2 Pistachio-filled ones I got last year while in Sardinia were very expensive. Just I got 4 different versions this week. 2 Vergani (Milano Classico, Pistachios & chocolate). 2 Bonifanti (cherries & chocolate, coffee & chocolate).
Started eating the first one today (cherries & chocolate), washed down with a cheap cava, before lunch.
Next year I go to Milan and bring back some myself.
Wow! I could groove to a panettone with pistachios!
The Panettone Alla Elena with apricot, dark chocolate, and orange.
500 gram panettone for $56 ($54 in Montreal , $56 in Toronto), which is steep.
(No raisins)
Which one, there is one <$10. There’s one >$10.
Red box
Lol! Still not worth the extra $30+

Here’s an article in a local online publication about what goes into the production of authentic panettone. Both the ones the restaurant imports and the locally baked ones featured go for around $60.
The doughs are quite different, panettone is yeast based whereas fruitcakes don’t have any yeast. The consistency and flavor of the final product is very different
i’ll take your word for it. My mother is dead, so I can’t ask her, and I can’t remember the last time I had panettone ![]()
The ingredients and appearance seem identical to me.
Fine. I’m not giving you that quarter of my $56 CAD panettone . LOL
Agree that the texture and taste of Panettone is unique.
Very light and rich at the same time.
I have been disappointed by most panettones baked by smaller indie Italian bakeries in Toronto. The big panettone bakers in Italy are selling a pretty special product that I doubt many can master at home.
Of course, Italian butter is superior to Canadian butter for baking, too.
Ha ha
. Enjoy! ![]()
Königskuchen tastes very different to panettone. It’s much more dense. It really like the difference between a (sweet) bread and a cake
From what I remember it was pretty light, but I never cared much for the candied fruit in it.
the Panettone Alla Elena with chocolate, from Elena Restaurant in Montreal
It’s good. 8.5/10
I like From Roy and Loisin a little better.
This is the best Canadian-made panettone I have tried. Much better than Forno Cultura panettone or Blackbird Baking Co. panettone made in Toronto.
Was it worth $60 + shipping?
I paid $56 plus tax CAD and picked it up at Bottega Volo on College Street. I ordered it online through Bottega Volo.
I think Montrealers paid $54 CAD plus tax.
I think a 50 buck CAD Loison is just as good, maybe better, and might closer to 1 kg instead of 500 grams
I would eat this again but I prob won’t buy it again only because I like trying new posh panettones each year
happy to save you a slice, wrap it in parchment and foil and freeze it until I see you at some point in the new year
