Ozempic, Wegovy, GLP-1 meds / compounded semaglutide

Interesting. I’ve thankfully not experienced anything like this with friends who are on these meds, but plenty of halitosis with peeps who aren’t :smiley:

Hydrating properly when constipation is a well-known side effect seems like a no-brainer to me, but what do I know? I drink at least a gallon of water a day, probz.

I’ve seen (on youtube) some individuals using psyllium husk to make a keto-friendly bread substitute. I’m not going to try it, but for those looking into a keto diet, this may work for them.

The Guardian is WAY behind the curve on this one - Atkins dieters have been using psyllium husks as a carb substitute for decades. Scores of tried and true recipes already floating around out there. :slight_smile:

I am a big believer in psylium husk, along with a breakfast routine of milled flaxseed and milled hard red wheat from Harlowton Montana. A tablespoon each of Cream of the West and milled flaxseed, microwaved with 12 ounces of water for 2.5 minutes and then add in a teaspoon of peanut butter and some coffee creamer and I am good to go in the morning! I drink the psylium husk before or with lunch so I am trying to keep a good amount of fiber in my diet.

I weighed 246 when I started on Ozempic last August, so it has been around 10 months so far. I weigh 211 now and the difference in how I feel is night and day. I feel so much better now. I actually went into Afib for a couple years, in part due to weight gain. I am one injection away from using up my 4th pen but I hope to not want another until mid August at the earliest.
I have been careful to take at least 4 weeks off between each pen so that I do not become too habituated to it, but I still am up to using 60 clicks/1.6mg in each dose, which is not a small amount. I get just 5 injections from each $300/8mg pen, so it is expensive as all get out.
But $1200+ has gotten me 4 pens and 10 months of improving health…
Now I need to find out if I can maintain my weight for 2 months without using a pen, just exercise, dietary restraint and more home made meals. That would mean I only used 4 pens in 12 months and I could try to use less, or none, in the year following.
I keep track of my doses and my times, so I will enclose a photo of my synopsis below.

I’m seeing my endocrinologist in Aug, he’s been nudging me towards Ozempic and I think I’m ready to bite the bullet, I’m stuck at 224lbs, luckily I’m 5’11 with broad shoulders and chest so I can “hide it” fairly well, but I’m tired of wearing black all the time :D. Plus when I turn 65 next month, it’ll practically be free if he prescribes it.

This is interesting. Only seen in mice in studies but I wonder if it will also prove to be true in humans. My colleague on Mounjaro has slimmed down noticeably but their diet appears to be much worse - small amounts of unhealthy snacks. I suppose one really needs to commit to eating healthily on a reduced appetite. I have never directly asked if it’s just the junk food that appeals in the face of lack of appetite?

Rats tend to be the preferred tox species compared to mice in drug discovery settings as the metabolism of mice is very unusual high compared to many rodent and non-rodent species. At the same time, sometimes it is necessary to use mice as the rodent species and the findings/correlation are giving hints for potential issues in human clinical studies - one could expect based on these mice study findings to see some muscle mass loss in humans but perhaps on a lower level

From this Drugs.com article, it appears there have already been human trials on this issue. No?

I haven’t looked on the package insert if it is an “official” side effect (so it was tracked systematically in clinical trials (and then it shouldn’t be a surprise in today’s news) or if it was more an anecdotal event so far (like in your pic) and so there is no data collected yet which meets the requirements of clinical trials (statistical power etc)

Anecdotal alert here, but given how Ozempic works by reducing a persons hunger pangs, I do not see how it would not impact muscle mass to some extent if it is working effectively enough to reduce fat cells.
That is exactly how it has seemed to work for me. I lost more fat than muscle, but I have definitely lost some muscle too. On the positive side, I am able to exercise more effectively on my Peloton bike now after almost exactly 12 months on Ozempic, and I have lost 36 pounds at one point. (Down from 245 to 209.). But I have gained back 8 pounds since my 4th pen ran out in June. I blame the butterscotch pie and the Propellor Ales I enjoyed in Nova Scotia for a pound or two of that weight gain… But the pie was worth it!! LOL!
For me, Ozempic is totally worth it even with the side effects of mild acid reflux and the slight muscle mass loss. I feel better now than I have since late 2020, after Covid closed my gym earlier in March.
YMMV.

But I just ordered my 5th pen and will be starting to use it pretty much on the 12 month anniversary of my first Ozempic use on August 11th, 2025.
So I have not been able to increase my workout intensity enough to keep the lost weight off.
Yet.
