Nonnas

Has anyone out there seen the new Netflix movie Nonnas? It’s kind of cute and has a lot of good cooking scenes, but the script is cliched. Big Night sort of does the same thing just with more nuance. I don’t have enough Pauline Kael / Roger Ebert in me to really get into it.

This might have a better home in the What are you watching thread in NAF.

@moderators?

My take, FWIW.

Thank you for replying. I guess you stoped watching before you find. Out Talia Shire’s former nun character was a secret lesbian. In the end restaurant gets a good write up and is a success. Like I said you would be better of watching Big Night. It did not even make me all the hungry which a good food movie should do.

Yeah, just couldn’t do it — the food wasn’t enough to make up for the torturous script. And WHAT A SURPRISE the restaurant is a success!!! /s

Does Vince get the girl, too? Lordt.

Big Night is in a whole other league.

I watched it last night. Cliched as heck, but based on a true story. You can go to the actual restaurant.

I could… but I probably won’t. And I seriously doubt the true story is even half as clichéd as the movie was.

PS: Does Vince get the girl? I’m on the edge of my seat here :wink:

I think he does. I like Linda Cardelini but this was a part she could have played in her sleep.

Eh, you folks are way too critical. Yes this was based on a true story, and one I actually recall hearing about in the news. I found it to be a nice call back to Big Night, with great cameos, and an enjoyable piece of escapism (and much better than a good Hallmark movie.)

There’s this;

I recall hearing about this place when it was just Italian grandmas. Now it’s grown to other cultures and ethnicities.

I have long wanted to go to the restaurant, though I am not in NY very much. The expansion to other cuisines (and other Nonna’s) happened many years ago.

here’s a free link to an interview with the actors.

Not commenting on the film itself, but did anyone else notice Chowhound got at shout-out (about the 33-minutes-left mark) when they declined to review the resto?

thx-love it! Comments are great too.

I have reservations here in July (that a friend made prior to the movie) and I will be sure to report back!

I watched this last night and enjoyed it. While the script was somewhat predictable, the scenes with the Nonnas arguing and getting their makeovers were my favorites. Seeing these older actresses get screen time with each other was a highlight for me, especially Talia Shire and Lorraine Bracco who have definite screen cred in mob movies. I burst out laughing when Shire’s character called out her family in Philadelphia–a reference to her role in the Rocky movies no doubt.
Plus, I hadn’t thought about capuzzelle in YEARS! A great-aunt of mine made it a few times when I was a child but I was always hesitant to try it.

In one of the last scenes, you see that her wedding ring is finally on her right hand. So I do believe they get together at the end.
