New Jersey Coronavirus/Covid19 Local Restaurant Specials

Had their soft shells at Sitting Duck several times last year and they were delicious.

I am thrilled to report that Chinese food is available at Asian Bistro in Lincroft. It’s the former Eastern Empire 3, which was our go-to Chinese. We ordered takeout Monday night–no delivery. Very hygienic food handoff. The egg roll is still the best around: fresh, hot, and not a single drop of grease. I ordered hibachi shrimp: 9 shrimp with vegetables that were perfectly al dente. The DH ordered spicy basil chicken and loved it.

Road trip anyone?

Paterson and Hoboken… then Nicholas Creamery on the way back!

75 for two chickens is a little steep for me.

Cpl food offerings by Old Glory in Keyport of which I’m a big fan. Want to try that 4 for 40 I think.

If you drive to Nicholas Creamery in your car and I drive in mine, and we each get three scoops - is that the same as getting the six-scoop sampler? :icecream:

Stopped at the Tramas truck today for lobster roll and tuna tacos. Tasty

You can walk up to the truck, don’t need to call ahead. Though I suppose you could if you wanted

Not really a Coronavirus special but special all the time. An early Mother’s Day dinner from Ada’s Gojjo in Asbury Park. We lean Ethiopian for the main course (doro wot, mesir wot, and atakilt wot) nbut added some tostones, shrimp in garlic sauce, and empanadas. Ada was there cooking as usual and very happy to see us.

We got takeout from semolina and it was amazing. We haven’t had dessert yet but expecting that will be awesome too. I posted on it in the what’s for dinner thread. Easy transaction. Left a message several days ago and was given an exact time to pickup. My husband tipped in cash and he said the staff looked surprised but everyone’s wearing masks so who knows.

I must say that Barnacle Bill’s is making a killing right now and their DIY LIT Kit has been a huge hit. Even though going to the liquor store and buying the necessary booze would be cheaper, people are choosing to support this institution.

Have to also add that my review of them is currently the link they have in their Instagram bio, and my blog has gotten major traffic from that in the past month, so I know people (and I’m guessing many new, curious customers) are checking them out.

Mom wanted pizza today, but what she did not know was that I was going to surprise her with pies from Pete and Elda’s / Carmen’s. What a journey it ended up being. An hour round-trip from work, and then what ended up being a nearly 90 minute wait in the parking lot when I got there.

I called at exactly 4:45 when I got out of work and was told, “25-30 minutes”. Perfect, I thought! It will be ready when I get there. Well, not so much. It was a teeny tiny bit of a shit show. Make no mistake, I am not writing this to blast them. On the contrary, they were inundated and had I been working there, probably would have thrown my hands up in surrender. I arrived at 5:15 and made my way into a tent they had set up outside their takeout entrance with markings on the ground six feet apart. There was a spot or two left, which I grabbed. A gentleman with a radio would take our last names and the last four digits of our phone number and call in to the kitchen/takeout window where they presumably kept a list of who ordered what and if that customer had arrived yet. However, he left shortly, never to be seen again and the line continued to expand to the point where it stretched across the parking lot. Two more employees came out shortly after with radios, taking names, etc.

As the clock ticked, I realized that people from outside the tent were getting their pizzas before us waiting in the tent and we had been there longer. Conversation struck up and it seemed a good four or five of us had all called at around 4:45 and it was nearing 6 PM. One guy’s ticket they flat out lost and he got rather angry and started to walk away but they said they would whip his order up and get it out next (I ended up getting mine before his). I was asked three or four times for my name and to spell it, and there did not seem to be any recognition of it with an order. Finally, I was asked what I ordered and for my phone number. I was called to come to the window. My name on the ticket, which I had spelled over the phone and now three more times, was down as “Daggiane”. The other “4:45 guys” got their pizzas and then I received mine. For all I know, my pizza could have been ready for an hour.

When I got my pizzas, the guy behind the window apologized profusely and I said it was no problem. Mother’s Day + a Sunday = catastrophe. This place is normally swinging with routine two hour waits in non-quarantine times, so part of me is not surprised. However, a larger part of me was a tad bit annoyed that they did not have a better way of doing this given they are used to massive crowds and having, essentially, a famous product in New Jersey. Another worker mentioned two kitchens working at the same time and “trying to match orders up”. That’s recipe for a disaster.

In any event, the pizza was delicious and mom was very surprised. What a day!

My friend called Cuttler Produce this morning to place our weekly order; instead of their usual 1-week wait time, he was offered pickup as early as Wednesday. They’ve obviously gotten in a groove/have their system working, but I suspect that with grocery stores being better stocked + people feeling like they can go out in masks, it sounds like their volume has slowed a bit. Should be interesting to see if they continue to offer this to the public.

Putting this link here because it will get more eyeballs… forget drive-ins; how many of you are game to start going to restaurants in the next month? Sorry to say I’m not…

We drove to New Orleans Saturday and stopped in Knoxville Saturday night. It was like a different planet, restaurants open, supposedly at 50% capacity but every parking lot was packed for the Outbacks, Texas Roadhouse type places. Fast food was still just drive through.
We did not see anyone wearing masks, even the front desk person at the hotel.
