New items you’ve purchased at the grocery store

It’s less about the cooking liquid but they contain some bitter compounds which get destroyed but longer (15-20 minutes) cooking, otherwise you will have remaining bitterness which you might have tasted

Okay, thank you.

I hear you. Though mushrooms of all types are my thing, this variety hasn’t been. Of course it may simply be that the beech mushrooms I have been able to get are more bitter than average. Luckily there are a lot of other mushrooms that I know I enjoy for sure.

Gah, no, don’t do that.

Yes, shimeji can be described as bitter, or perhaps grassy, when raw, but when cooked they take on a very nutty flavor.

Try this. Do you have Old Bay seasoning? Leftover packets of instant ramen seasoning? If no, then some salt, minced garlic and a drizzle of sesame oil will do as well.

Season them, let them sit for about 30 minutes, then air fry them. They turn out almost like those seasoned Blue Diamond almonds. Salty, savory, a bit sweet, and crunchy. :yum:

All else failing, send them to me.

Ha, I will try again another time. It’s very rare for me to throw out food. LOL

I got some Indian cookies a while ago while shopping for a Diwali gift. Parle-G Royales, which are slightly sweetened rectangular biscuits, and Jim Jams, which are a round sandwich cookie with frosting and a fruity center. Both are pretty good.

You can never have too much fiber in your diet, so I picked up this cute 3lb package of miniature apples.

Some of them are so tiny you could eat them with one bite. Here’s one with another Apple product har di har for size comparison.

These are air buds.

I tried those at Sprouts where they were sampling them. They were a little too sweet for my liking.

My favorite local market “La Bonita” has 2 new (to me) varieties of apples on sale this week for the amazing price of 3 lbs/$1.00. One variety is “Sweetie”, a cross between the Braeburn and Gala varieties. I bought 2 of them. To me, they were nothing special flavor-wise, too soft and not all that different from my least favorite variety, Red Delicious. I’m glad I only bought 2.

The other variety was Ambrosia. Per Wikipedia, “parentage is suspected to be Starking Delicious × Golden Delicious because those apples existed in the orchard where the ‘Ambrosia’ was discovered growing“.

I liked the 2 I bought enough that I went back and got more today. A good balance of sweet and acidic with just enough crunch for me.

Oy. I hope they’re not too sweet for me. My favorite these days is Cosmic Crisp, which I find just the right balance of sweet & tart, and they’re juicy and crisp.

I just thought it would be an easy way to add more fruit (outside of breakfast) to my daily intake. Plus they’re sofa king cute I couldn’t resist

We spoke of Cosmic Crisp before when I mentioned it was by far my favorite and you said you liked it very much as well.

Re: your “sofa king” comment, I recently saw this (I was unable to watch SNL videos in Japan because NBC makes them region dependent) and it had me ROFL.

I’m a cosmic crisp cider guy.

My former favorite cider was Ace, from NoCal, but they stopped distributing in Oregon so I had to find a new one.
There are several flavors in the cosmic crisp arsenal.
The delivery guy told me they used real fruit and not just extracts and flavoring.and that’s why they’re so tasty.
These are not sweet ciders , + they clock in at 8-10% alcohol

New to me. I like it. My dog likes it, too. I dropped a chunk on the floor and he gobbled it up. It has a crystals, a bit like parmesan, which I don’t remember experiencing in a blue before.

I haven’t seen Vermont cheese in Canada before.

These British bakes are new for us in Canada, too.

I currently have a final can of honeycrisp cider in the fridge that is very pleasant to drink, although it could be just a hint tarter to make it perfect.

Aged Gouda has the crystals too, so it was probably the Gouda component rather than the blue

I grabbed a shot of this chart at Sprouts so you can see where the sweetness vs tartness levels of each apple falls. Rockit is at the top of the sweetness level. This chart will come in handy for those choosing the proper apple.

This is the 2nd I’ve bought these “cookies” (mandelbread/mandelbrot/biscotti are all a type of cookie, right?)

They are somewhat expensive at full price, but were marked down to $2.99. Though I bought them at Albertsons, the bakery that makes them, “Chompies” is a deli/bakery in Arizona, so IMHO, they’re really not “store bought”. What they are, though are the best “cookie” I’ve ever bought in a store!

Though there are no almonds in them, there’s a strong aroma of almonds…reminiscent of marzipan/almond paste. Not too sweet, good quality chocolate and indescribably delicious!

Here’s the site of the restaurant, though the items they sell in supermarkets aren’t listed. Speaking of that, I have also bought their challah rolls which are very good, too (they’re slider sized).

I’m floored they’re saying Macintoshes are near Granny Smiths in tartness. Maybe they used to be, but I find them way too watery for pie, and insipid in taste. They right down there (for me) with Red Delicious.

Empures and Sweetangos are both excellent.

I haven’t had a Macintosh for many, many years. At that time, we didn’t have the many different choices in apples we have now and I don’t remember how they tasted.

I have had both Empires and Sweetangoes and like them. My current favorite everyday varieties are Cosmic Crisp, Honeycrisp (no, they’re not seeing good as they used to be) and Pink Lady.
