New items you’ve purchased at the grocery store

I’ve discovered Tex Mex trail mix. I’ve had Kroger’s store brand and Walmart’s Great Value store brand. They have basically the same components but are spiced differently enough probably to keep me buying both. They don’t really meet my definition of a trail mix because there is no sweet element, but I think that is a wise choice with these. I like these well enough that I’ll be trying other brands if I see them. Didn’t know Tex Mex trail mix was a thing.

These were half price; I think the store just started carrying them a few weeks ago and I guess they weren’t moving.

I got all types. While on a low carb kick. Probably give a bunch to my son the next time he visits from college.

I saw many varieties of those marked way down at Sprouts the other day but passed on them because they were multipacks and since I’ve never had them, I might not like them and then I’d be stuck with them (in general, I’m not much of an instant noodle eater).

That being said, Smith’s (our local version of Kroger) had these instant yakisoba (Japanese chow mein, if you will) on clearance marked down from $1.13 to $0.71 and I bought some for times when I’m not in the mood to cook. I’ve had them in Japan and know that I like them.

Throw in some chopped vegetables and some protein and I’m good to go. If I had Worcestershire sauce I could use some in instead of using the seasoning packet. I don’t have any now. but will pick some up in the store.

Funny you mention that. We’ve usually had some kind of easy-noodle (soup or just noodle) stuff in the house if the kids wanted something after school and I wasn’t home yet to cook for them.

I had always just boiled according to the instructions before my kids got old enough to make this kind of stuff for themselves. They started jazzing it up with eggs, beans, onions or scallions, even baked beet chunks (oldest daughter was a beet freak for a few years).

In the first batch I made just added celery, pickled ginger (the kind that is eaten with sushi) and an egg. I was worried the pickled ginger would be odd, but it fit quite well!

I bought these today, and enjoyed them.

Currently on sale for $2.99 CAD, discounted from $4.99 CAD, at Farm Boy in Ontario.

A lifetime ago I had a part-time job at a California agricultural experiment station that was part of the university I went to. One of their major projects at the time was developing citrus with varying thicknesses of the rind to provide protection levels against temperature. Thick for colder areas; thin for warmer. I can’t tell you how many hundreds of halved grapefruits I saw back then.

That said, when citrus is sold by weight, it’s a problem if not disclosed.

I bet all that extra peel and pith might make for a citrus type, homemade potion or two.

For the first time, I bought a Lucy™Glo apple (at Sprouts supermarket). I would rank it as the best apple I’ve ever eaten…and beautiful to boot! VERY intense apple flavor. It almost tastes like apple-flavored candy. I like apples with a sourish aspect to them and this apple definitely has that aspect! They were $3.99 lb and this one apple alone was $1.68. I’ll buy some again, but with other apples (Granny Smith, for example) on sale as low as 3 lbs for $1.00, I can’t afford to buy these delicious apples too often.

Not all for me. :joy:

I opened the walnut rum crunch marzipan, and it’s good.
I’ve bought the Florentines before and they’re also good.

The new things for me are the walnut rum crunch marzipan, dark chocolate Mozart kugeln and the cherry marzipan. All available at Fiesta Farms grocery store in Toronto.

How much do they cost up in Canada ? (We like Niederegger but they are so expensive in the US - especially after we visited them in February during a trip home in Luebeck)

The 110 gram Niederegger bars were $5.99 CAD (around $4.50 USD) each which is a bit high.
The cherries were $14.99 CAD.
The Kugeln were around $12.99 CAD.
I don’t see the price for the Florentines, but I think they were around $12 CAD.
These were bought at an Italian run grocery store, and the same chocolates are probably cheaper at the Polish grocery stores, which I haven’t visited lately.

10 pack, had my eye on this brand for awhile. Finally ordered.

They do $2.99#. The interior color is ruby. Nice crisp deep flavor.

Re bin, I asked…Mgr. recommended asking any employee for assistance. The main issue the store is seeing are hands not scoops going in the bins. Especially children’s hands. Dogs show up at the store. Every employee is on high alert over it. My local Sprouts is very new and the Mgr. shared the bins are an issue. Customers are even reporting on one another. Who knew?!

When they had them pre-COVID, my local Wegmans often had a lever you pulled to “drop” the bulk item into a bag - so no hands. Those I liked. I often had to find a store associate to let them know I just saw a kid (and his mother) with their hands in the nut bins. I could see the tightening of their jaws as they went to deal with it.

That’s what most, but not all, are like where I shop. Some have scoops, or huge “tweezers” for things like bulk chocolate.

While at World Market I found these, reminiscent of some I got in Montreal. Yay!

I guess I somehow wasn’t clear about the samples. ALL the samples are in containers like these which are already filled and covered (this photo is apparently from a Sprouts in the Denver area.)

At my local store they aren’t on a table like this, but on the end caps of the aisles where the bins are.

When I do purchase something from the bulk bins, I am absolutely sure to use the various scoops provided and would never even think of getting items out of the bins in any other way.

I was in the store today and noticed the man again. Today he was wearing a shirt that had “Security” written on it in big letters. He wasn’t wearing that yesterday.

And I sent feedback to Sprouts about my experience. I may not hear back, but I did what I thought should have been done.
