Looks like fruit leather, ancestor to Fruit Roll-ups?
Yes, equally revolting.
Fruit leather does come in handy for hiking or backpacking. I tend to throw a banana in my pack along with an apple on spontaneous morning hikes. The apple usually survives pretty well but the banana is usually in bad shape if I forget to eat it soon into my hike. We used to make fruit leather for backpacking but it looked much better than what you show there. I agree, revolting.
Aha! No wonder that never crossed my mind, as that’s another demographic group I’m not a part of.
To loosely quote Dean Martin "I don’t hike bc I’d spill my martini "
Oops! Not intended to be a response to @linguafood .
Does anyone know of recipes using fruit leather as an ingredient? It’s often just dried fruit, right?
My kids left behind some dried fruit after their last visit.
They also left some jerky that says “no refrigeration required” and “use within three days of opening”.
Granted that’s “for fresher tasting” flavor, but still! It’s a “big 10 ounce bag”!
I could see chopped up fruit leather going into gorp or cowboy cookies.
Or vegan breakfast bars. Hee hee. Energy balls.
Substitute the dried apricot in apricot coconut condensed milk balls.
Instead of dates in date-type squares.

One of my posts on Chowhound was after I eaten some jerky that had been open much longer than 3 days. It had never even occurred to me that jerky might need to be refrigerated. The back of the Jack Link’s package says refrigerate or use within 3 days after opening-- not a “best by” recommendation. https://www.jacklinks.com/shop/media/catalog/product/1/0/10000018005_3.25oz_jl_bf_orig_jerk_back_1.png
I did some google searching after I ate the jerky and found that mold can be an issue with Jack Link’s. There wasn’t any mold that I could see on what I ate, and I didn’t get sick from eating it. I think the concensus on the Chowhound thread was that the company was probably just covering their back in case something did go wrong.
I’ve had some Biltong go moldy fairly quickly.
I haven’t had any issues with American or Canadian beef jerky.
Thank you! I was thinking oatmeal fruit bars, but I found these
Here’s one for cranberry sauce from cranberry leather
Personally, I’d donate it. It’s hard to imagine repurposing being good.
Queue way too long at Ichiran Ramen on a Friday nite. No worries.
Brought an egg sandwich to a Kobe Beef Steak dinner. (Riff on bring a ham sandwich to a steak dinner theme).
RUN, don’t walk to get some Tillamook chocolate hazelnut ice cream.
It is the shiznit.
Most of the commercial prep nowadays (vs., say, 30+ years ago) that I’ve tried is either more moist throughout than old-style jerky, and/or maybe has had wettish flavor coatings applied after the initial drying step. Either way, mold growth could be an issue after opening with something more wet.
I dry my jerky to 35% of the original weight and don’t add more flavorant after the initial curing step. I’ve had some of it in a baggie at room temp for months and never gotten any mold. But if I wanted it to be softer like today’s commercial stuff, I wouldn’t dry it as much, and would probably store it in the fridge from day 1.
Contrary, I dry Biltong only down to about 60-50% of the original weight. I’ve gotten some sprinkling of white mold on the Biltong after just a month at room temp, and even have some refrigerated in the basement fridge which got some mold after about 9 months (edit - forgot it was down there, so it could have appeared months before the mentioned 9 months).
I just gave it a wash/scrub with white vinegar, dried it and ate it.
Never seen it! I will have to scout it out.
Oh, it’s def a new flavor. They have a whole shelf (bastardos!) with their “chocolate collection” at my local stupidmarket: German chocolate cake, this one, brownie batter ice cream, and dark chocolate cookies & cream
Oh, the horror!!!
I buy the Tillamook Caramel Toffee Crunch, Caramel Swirl, and occasionally, the Waffle Cone Swirl.
You’ve just added another one for me to try. Damn you.
Oh damn. Freddy’s just had a bogo and I stuck my nose in the air and walked on by as I’m trying to loose a few. I love hazelnuts and German chocolate cake. Double damn you.
Oh, I’m perpetually in the same boat, but my PIC deserved a treat (and I can usually control myself and just share a scoop with him )
@LindaWhit - I absolutely adore their coffee almond fudge, which is why I never buy it
I have no willpower when it comes to ice cream. If it is in my freezer it calls to me like Lorelei luring the fishermen.
