MJ's Middletown [NJ]

I have not eaten “in” MJ’s for 10± years or however long they have been opened in TF. I tried making it a local go to as it was when It was The Grist Mill. The crowd at the time of their opening was mostly 20-something(s) and their frequent karaoke and open mic nights made it a more raucous environment than I could unwind in. That compounded by the average at best food made it very easy to stop going to. I’m interested to see if the target audience has changed in TF and once the world gets back to normal if I would find the crowd more palatable as I currently find the food.

I would like that cause I could literally walk home from there, or wind up going over the falls in a barrel. 50/50 on those odds if I’m intoxicated enough.

Those 20-somethings are now closer to the age group I was talking about! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I would honestly suggest giving it a try, especially if mom is buying. For obvious reasons I’m going to recommend the TF location while obviously further it’s the only one I’ve eaten at. (though I assume Joon goes to Neptune) It’s hard to find pizza - sushi - burgees - meals all under one roof and all be decent/ good. That’s been my experience with it and as stated I remain quite satisfied.

My son has has a burger but I haven’t I was glad to see seal confirmed he enjoyed it.

I used to go to the Neptune one but I’ve moved and since been to the TF location a couple times.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a place I would go just for the food. But whenever I’ve ended up there (mostly things like whatever game night or UFC). I’ve been more or less happy with what I got. There was one time they brought out corn tortilla tacos with the tortillas not warmed at all - cold actually - it seems impossible but it was like they didn’t know corn tortillas have to be cooked hot before serving. Those tacos got sent back.

We sorta delved into a sub-thread about MJ’s in the NJ Restaurant News thread so I figured I would give their thread a bump. Had a typical good meal from MJ’s, Tinton Falls location, still doing a good curbside pick up if you choose. (kudos for still accommodating those leery of re-opening. I’m not one of them but I respect the effort)

Here’s a typical order:

Lobster bisque in a bread bowl. Actually it’s pretty darn good!! I like black pepper so that’s all me but it’s very good, love the sourdough.

Daughter got sushi or is that sashimi? Lol either way it’s good!

Wife ordered the #1. NJ Diner meal, hot open face turkey sandwich! Sweet potato tots as the side!

I got the # 2 NJ Diner meal a turkey club! They use Texas Toast so kudos for attempting a twist, I prefer normal bread but still a good sandwich.

An apple cranberry pecan salad we were supposed to share went unopened.

All very well done!

Just realized I was so hungry I forgot to take a pick of mine! Lol

Went again last night and once again enjoyed the food we got. Nothing really earth shattering, but def enjoyable. Quesadilla, turkey club, and burger. Burger had a smokier taste to it than a lot of the nearby spots. Seems like they grill it maybe rather than flattop? Only quibbles were forgotten accompaniments To then quesadilla and the burger one level undercooked than asked. But def enjoyable and plenty left over for lunch today

“Undercooked” is always better than overcooked! Did you eat inside or out? I think they have some nice outdoor dining overlooking the falls but I have yet to dine in there, my experiences have been all to-go.
How did you like the Turkey club? They use Texas toast so it’s a little thicker bread but I like it.

We got it to go. It’s a pretty good process. I go in as it’s quicker than the car side it parking is rough there.
Enjoying the turkey. Bacon could be a bit less fatty. But nice sandwich and appreciate a solid pickle on the side. Agree I like the thicker bread. It holds up better

Three of us went to the Neptune MJ’ s for lunch on Sunday. First time I’ve been there. We were pleased with the service and food. My Honey-Thai Wrap was delicious. My companions were equally happy with their Buffalo chicken Wrap and hamburger. The side of chips, although crisp, were not very tasty. I will go back.

(Tinton Falls Location)

I have placed a couple orders for MJs through DoorDash recently, having visited the location when they first opened a few years back and not really caring for it. Decent enough sandwiches. Anyone know if the locations are franchised? I see they are up to 8 now.

I’m pretty sure that all locations are company owned.

I live very close to the one in Bayville and have been there many times. In the summer there is nothing like sitting out on the back deck or at the tiki bar and enjoying the view of the Barnegat Bay. I usually get sushi (white lotus roll) and have been happy with it. I did get a steak sandwich special once that I didn’t love. In fact that might have been the only time I was there and didn’t get sushi.

I’ve also been there on summer nights not for dinner but for drinks and to see my friend’s band on the outside stage. Also very fun.

What was that location prior to MJ’s? Unfortunately the one closest to me no longer offers sushi.

They stopped at TF? Wtf?

Yeah towards the end of the lockdown when it was still take out only it became a decent convenient sushi place. Maybe they brought it back, if so I’m unaware.

It was Windows on the Bay and then The Cove.

I’ve honestly come to appreciate MJs in this boring wasteland of Middletown, where going to a restaurant after 8 PM is considered “late night dining”. The food is actually quite decent, and the martini more than serviceable.
