MJ's Middletown [NJ]

I wonder if the sheer summer volume will help esp the beach club scene? But I agree the mj’s formula is built on back of booze. Risky going for sure.

An MJ’s without booze? The other night we observed an absolutely packed bar (a pretty large one at that) and the whole night I saw only a couple of pizzas and some nachos. Not a food crowd.

I’m floored that they are going to attempt to succeed on food alone.

As long as its audience gets what it got from Michael Angelo’s (pizza and Italian sandwich delivery, 90% of time order wrong), it will do just as well as the last two incarnations have done. Expect them to last two seasons unless they change something up.

Bad food scene? REALLY?

In my opinion, yes. I’m talking strictly about mb, not surrounding area.

Can you elaborate?

I think certain dishes at beach tavern have been ok and the venue is quite nice. Besides that, I don’t really think the town is a hot spot for food. I used to get the “all you can eat” crab at eventide but that was many years ago.

I like to go to the beach tavern on Tuesdays they have steak night, a prime sirloin for 25 bucks , its a good eat

Is that the one they serve topped with butter and a side of fries? I remember that was a good steak.

yup

I’ll add kitchen witch to the list too. Have enjoyed that spot. But that’s it prob

How is Kitchen Witch? I wanted to take Justin there this week. After binge watching the new Sabrina series, it would be appropriate.

I’ve been to KW twice, but it was well over a year ago. The thing I remember being very good was a house-made breakfast sausage…

I’ve really enjoyed it the few times ive been. Be prepared to wait and somewhat close quarters. Granted I’ve only gone in offseason. The biscuits and strawberry butter and the Merlin’s grilled cheese are two big favorites. Coffee was quite good too. There’s always one or two specials that look to be solid as well

I agree completely, although I have never been to Kitchen Witch, having a one decent location in an entire town isn’t very awe inspiring. I’ve heard a lot of people comment favorably on several bar or happy hour items at Beach Tavern, my one and only experience in the dining room has left me never wanting to go back. Take that for what it is…

Swinging this thread back to MJs, we got takeout from the Tinton Falls location last night. The short of it is that we were pleasantly surprised!

We shared two apps, the spicy shrimp, and their signature sushi roll. The shrimp were big and cooked perfectly. The sauce they were in reminded me of a New Orleans BBQ shrimp sauce and was very good. The sushi roll was a melange of flavors with two sauces and lots of seafood.

Two sandwiches for the mains. A turkey club sandwich was good and a signature Big Burger was even better. Cooked to medium as ordered and piled high with toppings, it was a very good burger.

We were taken care of by a masked waitress who came out to the car. Who knew? MJs in Tinton Falls is now on my pick-up list.

Nice, I don’t know if it was this thread or not but I’ve posted that MJ’s (TF) has been one of my covid “surprises”. I use to to when they first opened and it was garbage - truly bad but since trying during the pandemic have enjoyed everything we’ve gotten. Glad you enjoyed!

I like MJ’s, they seem to have really nailed that local casual pub vibe down, like a local modern TGIF type place. Everything’s been pretty decent, haven’t had a bad experience there, across different locations.

I would have never even given the place a try, but I remember you posted that you liked it. Thanks for the rec!

Maybe I’ll give the Middletown location another try. At like 5 minutes away, it is prime for takeout. As I’ve said earlier in this thread, my mom and her friends love the place. I still do not know why-- they also mystifyingly love Ader’s. And yes, I have had a couple of okay meals there before the last two visits ended any chance of getting me back there again. Any time we want to do takeout and cannot think of a place, she suggests MJ’s and there is a resounding “No!” from Justin and I, even when she has offered to pay!

Seems that her age group (boomers and the generation(s) immediately after) just go gaga for MJ’s. The place is always rocking, and never with a younger (i.e. 20’s-early 30’s) crowd.
