Meat thermometer

Just a friendly PSA to check your meat thermometer to make sure it’s set to the expected temperature scale. I wasn’t paying attention and ended up with a batch of tough and overcooked meatballs :slightly_frowning_face: It did seem odd that after 30 minutes they were still only 74 degrees  A quick flip to fahrenheit set the record straight- hockey pucks for dinner!

This is funny. This has happened to most everyone. It is also refreshing that you posted to admit it, and it proves the unimportance of perfectionism. Mistakes happen, Thank God. Bravo.

What kind of thermometers are you thinking of and what can you do about it? I noticed two blue tooth thermometers were off compared to my thermopen when I realized poultry wasn’t cooking right.

I’m gifted Meater since September, the 4 thermometers block set. Have to say meat / fish cooking is so easy now with the app, such a life changer! Recommend to anyone who is cooking a lot of meat.

I used thermo pop before, totally different experience.

I still use my ThermoWorks ChefAlarms — I’ve ordered a Meater just to see how it works — but I absolutely have to say the leave-in probes with the outside-of-the-oven display are complete game changers. No more worrying about overdone beef or meat (poultry I’m pretty good at eyeballing, but I use the thermometer anyway) or the temperature of the oven being off. It’s really been probably the best kitchen gadget (yes, there have been non-battery powered leave in meat thermometers for my entire cooking life, and I’ve used them, but the probe-lead-outside display with alarm is so much better)I have. I’ve never oopsied and set it to centigrade - YET.

I made that mistake once with an expensive prime rib I reverse seared. When I realized my mistake and corrected it, the temperature was way over. I expected that it would be ruined; to my surprise it was perfectly okay.

I’m one of those metric people (in fact you can call me imperially challenged) so if my thermometer says 100+ degrees, I straight away something is seriously wrong as water boils at that temperature.
