What, no pics of lunch (assuming the popcorn wasn’t it)?
Right??? I was so disappointed that Mafalda was closed and El Calenõ was reservations only ( which I figured it would be) that beer and popcorn was my only consolation prize
On the way.
¡Bien hecho, tio!
My very late lunch(4pm) at Matiz.
Half board menu choices.
Tomato salad with tuna and basil purée. Why do chefs under salt and refrigerate tomatoes?? Like wtf?
Bacon, cheese burger with fries on a brioche bun. The fries were crispy and delicious, the burger was tasty but a bit on the dense side. And there were two chubby patties jammed onto the bun which made it hard to handle, but I managed after a bit of wrangling.
I was pretty full by this time so I asked for a really small portion of fruit salad, came wit the set menu, and I got a huge bowl. They were kind enough to give me a doggie bag to take back to the room.
I can’t really make a proper judgement on the food at Matiz because I’m eating the set menu only that’s included in my room price, except for the Chivo de Cannelon which was really good, but from what I’ve had so far it’s been pretty mid range. YMMV
The service is friendly and the room and side patio area are very nice though.
I loved the bottled sparkling water.
TOMATOES! Bummer about the refrigeration, tho. Did they have any flavor at all?
That burger looks great, but dense patties are weird. Almost like one’s eating beef sausage without all the great seasonings and spices.
Hope your dinner is muy maravilloso <3
Not really, I was so looking forward to some of those great local tomatoes that I saw in the Mercado this morning . Pre salt, then a bit more salt before serving/eating and never refrigerate them unless you’re using them for a soup or sauce
If you go back to the Mercado de Atarazanas tomorrow and it’s “noshing” time, the best stand, in our experience, is at the back, near the Calle de Sagasta entrance, not the front, the Marisquería el Yerno (the “son in law”). Gorgeous selection of shellfish and wines by the glass (yes, even at 10 am). And very busy, super popular with locals.
Gurmé Málaga calls it the corner of happiness.
Speaking of chiringuitos, is there really a big difference between places like El Caleño and the ones that are a bit closer to the city centre? Is it really worth the trek even though sardine season is pretty much over? I’d really like to experience a real lunch on the beach, instead of just popcorn and beer (which were fabulous)
I don’t think there is much difference.
There are several chiringuitos on Playa Malagueta, much closer to the center. Yes, sardine season is basically over now, so the espetos won’t be made with fresh sardines. The fanciest, as is higher end, would be El Merendero de Antonio Martín at Malagueta 4. It even has a Guía Repsol recommendation but I don´t know if the outdoor terrace will be open. It’s now a member of the Gorki group.
Remember, the local beer–Victoria.
Thanks!! I’ve already had a couple of Victorias, very tasty
I would just stroll along the Malagueta beach and see what is open now in late September
and what most appeals for a casual lunch on the beach.
Excellent idea!
Light dinner at Anyway Wine Bar was just the right amount of food after my very late lunch.
Started with a glass of Trago Largo natural orange wine. Delicious!
Then a Guilda de Boquerone, very tasty.
The server suggested some meats and cheeses, I picked the chorizo Iberico and he chose the presa (shoulder) Iberico. For the cheese, I got Payayo semi cured goat cheese and the Marantona viejo, which he described as “Manchego like”
My second glass of wine was a Fento Albariño, this dude knows his wine. It was delicious.
I should have stopped there but instead ordered the chocolate tart with mango ice cream.
Great spot in a great location, it was a perfect night to sit on their terrace and enjoy some good food and drink. Service was spot on .

Also, an obligatory sunset shot, you’re welcome

*Payoyo cheese, stupid spellcheck.
You did very well at Anyway Wine Bar!
I did! Thanks to your recommendation . Very cool spot, would return.
Very nice reports, @PedroPero, thanks so much for sharing with all of us.
My partner has a conference/meeting in Madrid next June. I will be grateful for the accommodation subsidy but I am not looking forward to the heat. The food, on the other hand…!
You’re very welcome, it was definitely my pleasure
I got so many great recommendations from @Maribel and others, it made choosing a lot easier(after I culled my list )
I really lucked into some great weather and the food was amazing!
What’s on the dining agenda today?
