Madrid

So many fried things :scream:

Dood, all the fried things. You ain’t never been to Spain before?? I’ll try to get some veggies in me tonight for dinner.

They fry in the south, braise in the north.
AndalucĂa, the land of the pescaĂto frito but also salmorejo, gazpacho, mazamorra, porra antequerana, all cold vegetable based soups. And at el Pimpi, one of the specialties-ensalada malaguena.

Was your tour with Food Sherpas?

Sitting on the Plaza de Olavide—no Pizza Pronto today because it’s closed on Mondays (I forgot).
But couldn’t’ have managed one after my delightful tasting menu at Clos with lovely internet friends. No photos—we were too busy chatting. But Clos gets my top marks. And it’s one of the very few
Michelin stars open on Monday.

At Clos we chose the menu ClĂłsicos, nothing fried.

Yes, it was Food Sherpas. I forgot to mention it.
Fun way to spend the afternoon.
FYI , the hours for Pizza Pronto are inaccurate on Google Maps, call ahead if you can.

I took a photo at the door. Smelled delicious.

For an example of being able to avoid fried food in a small, lovely family-owned restaurant in Madrid, here is the menu of La VaquerĂa Montañesa (cuisine from Cantabria in Northern Spain). Under the “verduras” (vegetable) category, there are 8 dishes from which to choose. No heavily fried foods, unless you order the rabas (which is the term for calamares in Cantabria).
As I mentioned before, “they fry in the south and braise in the north”.

So
you just need to know where to go

And King Felipe knows the restaurant well. It’s where he dines occasionally with friends.

If I should ever find myself in Madrid, I will keep this thread in mind, and thankfully @PedroPero can also benefit from your priceless assistance to find non-fried verduras during his visit. I know Spanish well enough to read menus, btw.

As I’d mentioned, I’ve only been to Barcelona (and Valencia eons ago), and finding salads, lightly sautĂ©ed veg, etc. was hella hard. It was pretty rough on our GI systems, TBH.

My favourite summer drink!! make it at home quite often myself. Or bring it to the park!

Almost 20 years ago we discovered a lightly effervescent red wine. The (Italian) winery also made a white & rosé version of it, but to have a bubbly-ish red for chilled summer drinking was lovely.

We had a lot of vermut in Barcelona.

Dinner at Araboka Centro tonight that I almost cancelled (glad I didn’t)
Very cute restaurant kind of hidden on a side street, was greeted immediately by the manager, Antonio, and sat on the terrace. It was a beautiful evening to dine outside.
Kept it “light “ tonight
Russian Salad with prawns :fried_shrimp:
A couple of croquettes de jamon
Braised beef cheeks with potato purée for my entree.
Tres leches cake with caramel ice cream.
All half portions which the manager suggested and it was just perfect.
Also had a nice glass of white wine a one red.
Food and service was excellent and I got out of there for around €40 including a tip.
Lovely spot, would recommend.

We like Araboka very much as well. The braised beef cheeks (carilleras) look delicious. It’s especially helpful for a solo diner to be able to order half portions.
Your Cloe wine is from Bodegas Felisa in Ronda.
The owner of Araboka really knows his Andalusian wines.

At Anyway Wine Bar (new location, much improved space) we had chorizo ibĂ©rico de bellota, tataki de vaca con helado de wasabi (yum!) risotto de calabacĂn y langostinos and a bottle of Fento albariño, RĂas Baixas

But on the wine list they also have a chardonnay from F. Schatz from Ronda that we should have tried (by the glass). They have a very ample. wines by the glass selection, as you can imagine.

Sounds good, I’m keeping it “light “ again tonight as I just had a very, very late lunch downstairs at Matiz as I was starving after my 20k steps walk to the beach :grimacing::man_facepalming:

And nothing but beer and popcorn
Haven’t tried Victoria beer yet?
