Madrid

Arrived in Madrid after a ez pz flight from Toronto.
Landed and was in my hotel room in just over an hour, quick shower and change and I was out the door. Headed over to the Mercado de la Plaz for a quick snack, place was jumping, but I managed to snag a seat at one of the many cute little stalls(name escapes me). Ordered an ice cold Mahou and the plato del Dia, huevos rotos. A little fancier than the more traditional huevos rotos, but still mighty tasty.
Casa Dani had a huge lineup, which is to be expected, back to the hotel for a siesta

First dinner was at Fismuler, and it was top notch.
Place was hopping at 8:30 on a Tuesday night ,I was worried I’d be the only person there .
Started with the leek and truffled mortadella tatin, best leeks and leek dish I’ve ever had.
Next was the famous,or infamous, escalope San Roman which is prepared table side. I tried to film the preparation, but something glitched out and it was boshed :sob:. I waited months for that whole ceremony and was crushed :persevere:. Anywho, the schnitzel was prepared with a gently cooked egg, shaved truffle and chives that were spread over the veal just before serving. Very tasty, but I’d probably not order it again, could only eat half(which was a major feat tbh) and took the rest back to the hotel.
I’m glad I saved room for dessert because the cheesecake was delicious! Like no other cheesecake I’ve had before, runny, semi sweet, semi funky in the best cheesy way.
I washed it down with a couple of glasses of Valmiñor (?) white wine.
All in all a super delicious dinner, excellent service and a bustling atmosphere. Would recommend :100:

Yeah! You made it! Just read that the strike was called off.
And you’ve started your trip in fine style at Fismuler. I love the escalope San Román but my husband and I share it! (At the la Ancha group’s other places, it’s called the "Armando¨,made of veal instead of pork at Fismuler). And their cheesecake is the tops.

I’m going to follow along eagerly!

Thanks Maribel, it was a rough week leading up to my flight, but I got the good news the day of :sweat_smile:
Talk about sweating bullets
I love how the San Roman has its very own, personalized take out bag, so cool :sunglasses:. The leftovers will be a snack/sandwich as soon as I can find some good buns.
Much more to come

Buns near you-
On Plaza Santa Barbara you have León the Baker and Manolo Bakes.

On Calle Zurbano at number 26 you have Crustó.

Thanks! :pray:t2: I’m going to Alma Nomad tomorrow for “breakfast “ , I’ll see if they have any small breads that will work, if not I’ll hit the other ones you’ve mentioned. Manolo Bakes is so close, the coffee and baked goods are pretty good :+1:t2:.

I regularly forget that I have an IG account as well. Too much of a hassle to keep up with it all. I need a personal assistant

Lunch, day two, real time-ish.
I’m glad I made reservations at La Castela, as it was rammed at 1:30 pm.
Sat at the bar, which is my preferred spot when I’m dining solo.
Started with a pincho of anchovies and a caña of Mahou(so darned good)
Then the Almejas Manzanilla, these were the larger ones on display, finished the bread then asked for a spoon to lap up the remaining, luscious juices
Finished off with a 1/2 order of Rabo de Toro, served with boletus and what I think were confit potatoes.
So unctuous and delicious
There were a few more caña, so no room for dessert, and don’t worry, I walked there and back from my hotel with a stop at Retiro Park..

Wow, so nice! This brings back memories…

Please tell me this isn’t the best beer in the world…

I liked this dish so much, I’ve been trying to replicate it ever since at home, not using oxtail but beef neck instead, using a recipe by Penelope Casas.
