Lunch Meats of Our Youth

I have to say it would be . A head cheese sandwich, Italian bread , with mustard. Picking Brussel sprouts on my friends farm north of Santa Cruz on the coast mid 70 's . 17 years old

What comes out of the can is high in fat, high in calories, and obscenely high in salt. I swear you can smell the salt from across the room.

Some would say that’s exactly why they love it.

I have a high tolerance for salt, but don’t like Spam for this reason, it is crazy salty.

I’m assuming there’s still a version with 25% less. Maybe not enough of a difference.

Right. Not what I consider redeeming features for food.

We used to be part of a work lunch bunch whose ethos was good, close, and cheap.

I worked for a guy who had a sign that said “If we are what we eat, I’m easy, fast and cheap.” A corporate killjoy made him remove the sign :sob:

That killjoy probably would not get, let alone enjoy, the recent book about Netflix’s culture: Hastings and Meyer, No Rules Rules.

Down to killjoys wherever they may lurk :-1:t2::upside_down_face:

Ok, lunch meats of my youth; for some reason my mom was never keen on lunch meats, and this remained so until she passed. When we were pretty young we did have bologna sometimes, on soft white bread with Mayo, but I preferred Miracle Whip at that time. Also, we occasionally had boiled hot dogs as foldovers for lunch too. Occasionally there was spam sandwiches, but we typically ate it fried for breakfast. I don’t think the 3 of us kids liked those items very well.

Peanut butter mixed with honey (so it would be less messy) was a go to, also tuna, and egg salad. Occasionally leftover meatloaf, or pot roast/roast beef sandwiches. I LOVED Underwood Deviled Ham, but she bought it only occasionally.

I knew ham as breakfast meat, but I can’t recall having a ham sandwich. I don’t think we had ham dinners ever, and not on holidays either. If we did, it was a rarity. I’m sure I had turkey sandwiches, but it’s not a vivid recollection.

As an adult, I buy Boar’s Head deli meats, freshly sliced. That said, it’s not a week in week out sort of purchase.

MMMM! Love beef bologna and ham salad. Ham salad I sometimes make for breakfast.

Good heavens, that is horrific! Speedy recovery!
I have learned that there are a few things at the hospital I “attend” (more frequently than desired) that I do like: their meatloaf is pretty decent, mac and cheese not bad, mashed potatoes okay, short ribs fatty but good for a change (how many meals in a row can you eat meatloaf?). I am on a super low-fiber diet so many things are sadly off limits.

I feel like I never see olive loaf anymore in the supermarket. I am outside of Boston and I feel like it disappeared from all the local places about 5 years ago for some reason. I used to love that stuff (occasionally!).
