Lunch 2024

Berkeley Bowl West and Tokyo Fish Market. The also sometimes have halibut trim, which I air fry, and at Tokyo Fish, “chowder bits” for just $3.99/lb. They go into soup with white beans or potatoes.

That should be toasted sesame oil, not olive.

I made herring in a fur coat and it’s my first time trying it and I absolutely love it. It really is as similarly satisfying as causa.
I am already looking forward to making another because I screwed up the layering and next time I’ll get it right. I made this with canned smoked herring and used less than what she called for and think because of how strong it is this ended up being the right choice.
I used an oval dish and had trouble getting enough potato, so I’d increase it a bit.

Many Dominicans love herring btw, particularly older Dominicans like my mom. It’s not nearly as popular with young peoples I find it a bit comical how obsessed she is with this brand of herring filets that she first got from my aunt. She then bought more when she was in NYC and had my brother send her some. I mean, I’ll eat them, but they’re not something I’d ever treasure the way she does. I particularly don’t care for Dominican preparations which don’t balance the oiliness with nearly enough acidity. Fish like herring needs flavors like pickled onions.
I said I’d make the shuba to use some of it and she told me how they’re there because she’s saving them. :unamused:

Roasted chicken (too dry), hummus (too oily), sauteed vegetables (too crumbly) with avocado.

Hard pass.

I need some ice cream.

“ DEER GARDEN Signature Fish Soup Noodle, Richmond Hill “

Suffering from the possible effect of ‘ Post Covid Irritable Bowel Syndrome ‘. For my lunch with the kids, who just came back from a week long cruise on the new Virgin Atlantic Cruise Ship - Scarlet Lady and requesting something Chinese, I proposed the above captioned venue.

The bowl of creamy white and dense, umami packed fish soup base noodle, garnished with sliced Beef Briskets and Tripe, Tianjin Preserved Chinese Cabbage, Cilantro, Minced Pork and Napa Cabbage was exactly what my delicate and tricky stomach asked for! Aromatic, tasty, non-greasy, light and wholesome. Most importantly, the content was totally in agreement with my sensitive tummy since it did not scream with discomfort afterwards!

An unexpected, welcome surprise was the plate of ‘ Hainanese Chicken Rice ‘ my son ordered. Both the chicken and rice components were surprisingly well executed and flavourful. One of the better rendition I have come across recently!

Standard Dominican fare of rice, pigeon peas and pan-fried chicken. We had two small dry coconuts that a neighbor gave us, so the pigeon peas were made with coconut milk this time.
I never bother to do the separate rice and bean sections because my goal is always to thoroughly saturate the rice.

Mississippi roast redux aka the gift that keeps on giving aka you can turn anything into a quesadilla.

Crisped up the meat in the pan before adding it to the tortilla, along with absolutely inauthentic quattro formaggi & a few pickled 'peños.

Sour cream, the murderously hot berry sauce from our local taco provider, and a shmattering of cilantro turned the meal into a real painting, no? :joy: Mexicoke to wash it all down.

Beautiful browning on the quesadilla! And I agree, everything can be made into one and be delicious.

Chinese dumplings, chicken-mushroom and chicken-corn. Because I’m perverse, served with Spanish EVOO and grated romano.

ETA: From New Dumpling in El Cerrito, CA. They had opened just before the lockdown, but pivoted quickly to selling the dumplings frozen. They’ve kept the prices constant, but what started out at 20 per bag, then became 18, and now down to 14.

Wrong! It’s a delicious char but definitely not burned for me

3 of the tiniest eggs from the local dozen a friend gave me, scrambled with fresh dill & parsley and folded in with sautéed spinach, sooooo… green eggs without ham?*

*LIES! There were two slices of uncured rosemary ham from Wegmans that I ate straight from the fridge. #NOREGERTS
