Lunch 2021

Yay!

Enjoy the (unexpected) gift of free time.

I have some free time, too. 2 full months of extreme inactivity.

Rigatoni with ragu alla bolognese from the freezer, and steamed broccolini.

Today exactly a year ago I landed in Baja Sur, after 24 hours straight without sleep and 3 flights. :sob:

Via MEX/Mexico City

And via Hermosillo

Finally, touched down safely in dusty Guerrero Negro, the first place on the list where I stay a week to see whales. Every small moment was felt in my stomach. It’s a tiny plane.

Where I just landed (Guerrero Negro, top of the map)

:sob::sob::sob:

OK, something happier…?

This was just out of the oven and it was late at night so I just made 2 quick snaps in case I wouldn’t make it again.

Yeast dough filled with mix crushed nuts and poppy seeds. The only sugar I used was some that I sprinkled on top. I ate 1 “snail”/coil with home-made chocolate spread.

Made the same yeast dough again, this time the balls are filled with Italian cheese. Here I was just done brushing the balls with chilli oil.

Grated lots of the same Italian cheese on the balls

Snipped chives and more grated cheese. By now it was already dark I put the tray on the windowsill for this last photo.

Third bean meal in a week. This has leftovers from 2 other meals, I only add fresh spinach near the end. Cheap and good.

Fresh roe with Korean chilli flakes. In Japan, Fukuoka to be precise, it’s called Karashi Mentaiko. It’s one of Fukuoka’s specialities but they adopted it from the Koreans after the war. Busan, Korea is about 214 m/133 miles north of Fukuoka, and Jeju island, Korea is about 260km/223 miles to the west. This roe with chilli flakes thing is also popular in Okinawa. The first thing I saw as I exited the airport in Okinawa was a BIG advert for Karashi Mentaiko.

I eat this a lot when tomatoes are in season. Other times of year I let tomatoes ripen for weeks.

Livers (calf’s and lamb’s)

And what I did with the spanner crab (the partner got the udon soup, I ate the legs and claws)

The crab again

A year ago in Mexico. Osprey has an itch. Seen from my table at a restaurant. It’s mating season right about now. Lots of ospreys around and nests are occupied.

What did you add in?

Just the usual shredded cabbage, with some bacon, Kewpie mayonnaise, okonomiyaki sauce (Otafuku brand), seaweed, and katsuobushi (bonito flakes).

Looks just like the one I had in Osaka.

We gestured to the server “no mayonaise!”. Now you see the thick brown sauce on top. The server cooked both cakes on a big built-in hot sheet right at our table. Very theatrical, the whole “show”.

Bottom left photo is when it was just done assembling all the ingredients. Mine, mixed seafood, was most expensive on the menu. Forgot what the partner’s choice was. Anyhow, we preferred the octopus balls.
