I just finished reading it last night. Nice send-off.
We’re seeing her at the Emerson Colonial Theater on Fri 11/1, details here. Maybe you’ll feel like venturing into Boston??
I didn’t see the Globe article - I let my subscription lapse - but that sounds so interesting!
I emailed the Globe article about touring “Three Pines” to a friend in Seattle who is also a big Louise Penny fan and who doesn’t subscribe to the Globe. So sad the Globe doesn’t allow gift articles. I’d love to email it to you alone if I could figure out how to do that.
It’s the Eastern Townships area of Quebec, and it’s just a little bit across the Vermont border. I’m hoping I can drag the younger and older adult males there soon.
I just messaged you with my email address.
The Eastern townships are so pretty, and it’s always a surprise to me that there’s countryside / “rural” area such a short drive from the city limits of Montreal!. I took a friend there a few years ago, and we were shocked when we looked up at the sky at night!
There are some businesses catering to this, that post some info online, too.
Someone else’s experience
Thanks so much, Saregama. As I’ve read about, the Eastern Townships have so much to offer in terms of cultural, food, wine, nature, outdoor, history activities to enjoy and so close to those of us even in southern New England. I really want to see the stars away from ambient light. The Louise Penny books are full of food and ambiance in so many ways.
My parents drove us 5 siblings to Expo 67 in Montreal from North Carolina. I really enjoyed at my then age (12) watching groups of teens speaking together, some speaking English, some speaking French. Led me to enroll in both Spanish and French in high school.
Truman: I didn’t get your message, but I can say if you google “visiting three pines” you’ll get lots of info that is perhaps more helpful than the Globe article, which was written by 2 people who’d never read even one of her novels. I see Phoenikia has already posted some links.
I haven’t spent much time in the Eastern Townships recently. I have skied at a Bromont and Mt Orford.
Brome Lake Ducks are quite well-known in Canada. I stock up when I see them at stores in Ontario.
I hope to visit this posh resort in the Eastern Townships some day.
Here are my scant notes from the last time. We also went to a monastery that was pretty, but not much else,
The maps and tourist info is plentiful bec of the wine and cider tourism.
Thanks! I think the Heron Suite Cottage at Manoir Hovey would do nicely! This is a dream that will have to stay a dream, however, since my husband would never agree to spending that much!
Boo!
Is this the monastery you are talking about. We always stopped to buy their hard goat cheese, its the best. By the way, i spent my childhood years at camp in the area. Miss it so much now that dh cant travel
The abbey in Louise Penny’s book “The Beautiful Mystery” was based on this one.
That’s the one!
3 stars, 12 rooms, much cheaper
@Madrid We can ask mods to move the Eastern townships chatter to a new thread if you’d like (for aspirational trip planning, and so it’s preserved somewhere find-able later, not embedded in WMP ) — your call.
(ETA: @moderators request to move this comment onwards to a new thread for Eastern Tiwnships / Montreal / Quebec — thank you!)
Sorry, I realized I created a lot of drift here! Mods, if these Eastern Townships could be moved to a new thread, that would be great!
Thanks for the suggestion, Saregama. I’m not sure my family will make it to the Eastern Townships anytime soon, but I’ve been collecting information for years now and would like to continue, now that my son has already used his passport once to spend 3 hours in New Brunswick, Canada, two years ago when we where in Eastport Maine.
I would love to make this trip.
I see a HO road trip in our future!!
The Eastern Townships are about a 4.5 hour drive from Boston, just across the New Hampshire/Vermont borders. Burlington, VT, and Montreal are further west.
