Too bad that’s not a vat of butter.

I wonder how those taste compared to the snow and king crab?

I remember watching a show on these things years ago and they were showing some boats that actually set pots for these. The damn trap was the size of a two car garage! I believe they said the amount of time and effort, and cost of gear, really didn’t payoff (considering the amount of crabs they would get)

2 days of crabbing and it is god awful. The windy conditions over the last few days here have the bay all churned up. I have two crabs and they are going into some stuffed lobsters today. Hopefully any of you crabbers did better than me this weekend! I’ll see if I can snap some pics of these stuffed lobsters. Then I’m off to the store to buy more to steam for dinner. It’s lobster fest.

This was the maiden 2109 crab voyage so things will get better. Some friends came to wish us luck on the way out.

It was a very tough day fishing today. The wind was cranking but we managed to get a few. I’m going to make some stuffed lobsters with some crab meat. I wish I had some corn on the cob but it was sold out. The crabs were all caught in “deep” water about 10ft or so in the channel.

Great pics Johnny!

What kind(s) of crab is it? Looks like a lot of work to pick the meat out; are there bigger crabs as well? Just curious, crab is my favorite food & luckily we get lots of it here - dungeness locally and of course King and snow crab from Alaska. Now I want it for dinner, damnit! :upside_down_face:

Thanks guys. It is a lot of work but sometimes you have to grind it out.

Those are blueclaw. Yes dungies are awesome but I’m on the wrong coast

Catching blueclaws hasn’t been great around here. It used to be decent getting nearly a bushel for a days work. Now I can barely catch 2 dozen keepers. Even the Chesapeake bay has been depleted for a few years. This may be a comeback year as I read that large numbers of baby crabs are being counted. A female crab lays over a million eggs in a lifetime, of which 1 or 2 will survive to maturity.

We dont keep any females at all. In my opinion there should be a law to let all females go. I think it would help the population out tremendously.

Thanks for the answer, but maybe you’re on the right coast, just not for dungie. NJ is sounding like a food & restaurant paradise and all the food porn I’ve been seeing is killing me! :yum:

Finally! The crab are starting to eat. 39 keepers. I’m pretty excited. Report to come soon. Th quality of the crab was great. We caught lots of rusty crabs. I can’t wait to tear into these.

Cleaned and ready for cooking…
