Let's introduce ourselves and get to know one another better

Welcome!

  2. My newly-remodeled kitchen. My old kitchen was well-loved and 30 years old. I went all out!
  3. Well, The French Laundry was awesome, but giving Steve Sando of Rancho Gordo a hug at his store during the same trip was even more memorable for me.
  4. Of course I gave my dog a food-related name, Taco!

I came to the Hungry Onion when Chowhound shuttered and found it difficult to navigate for some reason. Haven’t been back much since. I decided to click on it today and thought, “Why did I think this was so weird?” Anyhow, it will take a bit of getting used to, but I’ve enjoyed finding my old favorite Chowhound threads (COTM, Weekly Menu Planning, TJ’s YEA-MEH-NAH, etc.). I am more of a lurker than a poster, but hope to contribute when time permits.

Speaking of more time, I am getting close to retirement! I have enjoyed WFH the past 3 years, but alas, my company is calling us back to the office come September. This has caused me to think about moving my retirement plans up. Wouldn’t mind taking a pay cut if it meant I could continue WFH and still at least procure affordable health insurance for my husband and myself.

I’ve started thinking about cookbook proofreading, home recipe testing, etc. I’ve done a few searches but haven’t found much that doesn’t require related experience. Thoughts from anyone here on finding such a position?

New can be weird, but glad you’re back and hope you enjoy lurking and, hopefully, posting!

But are we weird in a good way?
I hope so!

LOL … I don’t think it’s so “weird” any longer. I love the look and feel of Hungry Onion. I need to get used to 1-searching for that that I’m interested in at the moment and 2-all replies to a comment are in the main thread, rather than “under” that one comment (maybe there is a way to view it this way and I just haven’t figured it out yet). Anyhow, glad to be here! I’ll “play” with the navigation more later - cooking today! Happy 4th of July everybody! :us:

In the upper right corner of a post that is a reply, the avatar of the poster to whom you are responding (in this case bbqboy) is shown. If you click on that you will see bbqboy’s post followed by all responses in a nested format. Not ideal, but effective (especially when there are multiple replies by multiple HOs).

ETA: Happy 4th :sparkler: :sparkler: :sparkler:

Those of us in the UK have free health care “free” in the sense that we do not have to pay when we need to use it. We have a National Insurance scheme which everyone pays into from their pay packet. Having contributed for decades I now find myself needing the NHS because if I had to pay for my treatment directly couldn’t afford it (chemo cost $2,000 a shot of which I had six and the radiotherapy probably something similar of which I’m having 20 plus the personnel cost of GPs, nurses, radioographers & consultants that diagnosed my cancer). It is unbelieveable that the current government are intent on privatising the NHS so their buddies can make huge profits out of people’s misfortune.

and it is galling to read this from the once “socialist” prime minister

and this is pretty damning of the current right-wing government too

I could go on and on adding reports of how the current government are trashing the NHS with the aim of privatising it but I will stop with those.

My father lives in Medford. If you’re around there, I’ll let you know when I visit from my own Indiana. I relish my one encounter so far (in Berlin) with a food fan known and enjoyed only virtually before. Can’t recall if that was Chowhound days or already HO. (We both transitioned.)

Aw. I’m tickled you still remember! That was a really fun afternoon at Thaipark, and it was great meeting your son, too. Any plans for a Berlin visit in the future?

We had a great time! I sure wish I had fixed plans to be in Berlin again. It’s one of my very favorite world cities. And it was very special to meet you and your husband there and (as I recall) at least one of your friends who dropped in. I hope your Summertime enjoyments are still going on there this year!

I think you’ll remember Colin with the mealworms. And maybe recognize that guy behind…

Sure! I’m in Ashlandia.

Neat! Great town, Ashland. I haven’t got to the Shakespeare thing, but I have enjoyed the food and arts and a neat vinyl records shop there several times. Lucky place to live!

My friend Mike is fond of referring to us as the northernmost outpost of Marin county.

I belong to a travel group on FB that linked your blog post about travel losing its romance.

I had a "Hey, I know that name moment.

Good article, too.
