Welcome over to HO. We’re a pretty good bunch. Pics of your BBQ would be welcome on the What’s For Dinner monthly threads - or if not BBQ, whatever else is on your table.

Ha ha. No, not you…there was this "Desert Shield " thing folks were planning for, which turned in to a storm.

ETA, after doing some math, I realized there was a relatively brief return to NYC, where I am from , as well.

Time is flying. Even when I was much younger this scene freaked me out.

I come for homecoming every now and again.

Let me add my warm welcome to others who have done so already! I hope you’ll become a part of this forum, and will share both knowledge and pictures! :sun_with_face:

Hi! We’re still-Californians even though long ago now we followed our son to Georgia (who’d followed a girlfriend we’ve successfully blocked from memory).

I frequently enjoy but don’t love cooking for its own sake, and living the good life on a tight retirement income means eating good largely depends on what I cook. So my biggest food obsession is searching out recipes that turn out to be new favorites.

After breaking down last winter on an empty rural stretch of I-75 in Florida, I killed time walking over to a plant on the horizon, where a food truck turned out to be serving the best tacos and tamales we’ve had since we left California. One of the workers looked over with a smile and said knowingly, “Good, huh?” Oh, yes, and in our memories now well worth breaking down for.

These pandemic days I and my fisherman husband are among the fortunates who can stay home – because we’re high risk and really need to. We dine, including on the fish he brings home, on our porch all summer in rural north Georgia and then all winter in rural Florida from our patio overlooking a freshwater marsh and its wildlife. Food’s definitely part of the good life, even though shopping’s currently mostly limited to drive-up pickups at the nearest Walmart.

Welcome Georgia! I hope you enjoy our community.

Please check out the Home Cooking thread And know there are many members who are currently avoiding shopping and trying their best to do more with less.

And feel free to share photos of the wildlife on your marsh!

That sounds like a wonderful retirement life!! Thanks for sharing a bit about yourself (and your hubby) I look forward to reading more about your culinary adventures. (Hopefully no more break-downs on the highway).

If you don’t mind me asking how did you find us?

Where in Georgia? Lots of mountains there. And lots of beautiful country. You’ll love exploring, once things open up.

And where in Florida? It’s another state with a lot of diversity, and a lot to see and eat.

Welcome!

I lived in DC about 78 to 84 and attended Howard University.

Husband and I are first and second generation from the Carribean respectively (although my dad is many generations from Alabama) , but we both grew up in outer boroughs NYC before moving to California for the military 30 years ago.

Son met HIS gf, now wife, in Florida then followed her to TURKEY! I’m going to assume you mean Georgia the state and not the country . :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Daughter moved to New York.

Both Turkey and New York have good food!

Anyway, we are thinking of moving to ATL for retirement, so any advice you have, food or otherwise appreciated. I will do what I can to offer the same.

You sound like you’ve got a good sense of humor. That counts for a lot around here. Hey, we all have family right. Welcome❣️

Welcome to HO, Georgia!!

Welcome! Great introduction! Lots of good recipes on various threads on the Home Cooking board and the popular monthly What’s For Dinner threads.

Someone once mentioned, NotJrvedivici. Until now I’d occasionally browsed and enjoyed, but life changes, friends who’d stroll over and “social distance” with us move away, and I thought of a place to go for more, virtual chat about good stuff.

Thank you, Linda. Such nice welcomes! That current “What’s for Dinner” thread already has me hooked. Quail breasts are no doubt permanently “out of stock” at Walmart, but creative subbing’s a way of life.

Hi, John. We’re about an hour north of Atlanta in the hilly upper Piedmont, near our son and his family and so my husband could be near Lake Lanier. Almost nothing’s flat on our hill here, while in central Florida near Inverness the 3 steps to enter our snowbird mobile home are a notable change in elevation. As for Florida’s diversity, we used to have a MH on an estuary off Tampa Pay, but the constant winds interfered too much with his fishing, so we traded great blue herons and manatees (and great shopping and amenities) for otters and sandhill cranes, and room to garden, inland.

We do some of our self isolation on the road, but as you say. There’s so much to enjoy again once we’ve beaten this thing.

Thanks, Miss Belle. Family does tend to have its flip side, but after a couple of alarming prospects, one of which lead us to Georgia instead of the Pacific northwest (!), fate eventually cut us all a break with our lovely GA daughter-in-law.
