Knives..what do you prefer?

Hard to beat a solid $30 knife that actually performs a nice find.
Budget blades like that punch way above their price when you pick right.

I won’t criticize your Revere Ware if you agree to not make fun of my first kitchen knife purchase, the Ginsu knives in a bamboo block. :grin:
I still have them 13 years later and use them occasionally, so there is that. They take a decent edge, they just do not hold it for long.

But I really need to get a better sharpener. I have an old pocket one made by Smith’s.
It works, but not really well. Kind of like my knives.

Can I suggest a whetstone (for knife sharpening)??


I have a really cheap knife I got at Goodwill - 3 minutes on this whetstone and glides through everything.

Your post made me consider a morbid request. My older brother got my Dad’s whetstone when Dad passed. I may ask my brother to will it to me if he goes first…
I have not seen the whetstone in years but it looked well used 25 years ago, i wonder what it looks like now.

I picked up my current whetstone (locally), but I do remember my Dad’s whetstone. He used it to teach me how to sharpen knives.

My Dad has been gone about 5.5 years, but I’m sure my mom still has his whetstone – probably in the same drawer, in the same box. Now you have me thinking… I may ask my mother what she is going to do with it and if I can have it.

Some things should stay in use in the family. I had not even thought about that whetstone until now.
My grandfather had a 6" belt knife he used only for castrating bull calves. Sharpening it wore the blade down to the point that it looked like a fillet knife. I have always wondered who got that knife when Grampa died.

If you have a flattening stone, take it over and offer to flatten the whetstone. Who knows? They might give it to you.
