Ketchups and Mustards and any other condiments you love

I recall that in the late sixties and early seventies crab Louie served on halved avocados was on a lot of menus. It was a very good combo, especially with big pieces of Dungeness crab.

Curried chicken salad / Coronation chicken on the half avocado, and curried prawn salad on the half avocado were quite popular in Canada and in the UK in the 70s and 80s.

A reply from Sir Kensington, about the ketchup. Note the signature–the original, small company was acquired, and the bean-counters took control.

Dear Ernie,

Thank you for contacting Sir Kensington’s about the availability of the product.

The Classic Ketchup has been discontinued. It’s always a tough decision for us to discontinue a product, especially when we hear from fans like you that really enjoyed it. We encourage you to explore our entire product line, as we’re constantly striving to innovate and provide high-quality products that meet the needs of our fans.

We will share your valuable feedback with our team, and hope you will give another one of our products a try.

Sincerely,

Unilever Corporate Consumer Services

There you go. Unilever owns Hellmann’s. And they are introducing (not sure when this webpage was made) their “new real ketchup”. (versus fake ketchup?)

I guess they would have mentioned it if they’d just rebranded Sir Kensington’s as Hellmann’s.

I remember that fondly, but one of the better chicken salads I ever had was curried and served on a hollowed out half pineapple with chunks of pineapple and macadamia nut brittle. When I make chicken salad, lately I go savory with grilled chicken thighs, mayonnaise, sun dried tomatoes, pine nuts, and chiffonade of fresh basil.

Hellman’s/Best Foods as called their mayonnaise “real mayonnaise” for as long as I can remember. In fact, my students in Japan would tell me how they liked American mayonnaise for certain dishes. I would always ask them which brand of American mayonnaise and inevitably they would say “real mayonnaise”. At that point I would have to tell them that “real mayonnaise” wasn’t the actual brand name and that would actually be either “Helmann’s” or “Best Foods”. And no, I never got into why the same mayonnaise had different names depending on which side of the Rockies it was being sold/bought. And I also wasn’t going to approach the controversy over whether Hellman’s and Best Foods taste different or not.

So in the end, I guess Unilever has decided to extend the “real” moniker to their ketchup as well.

BTW, the major (but certainly not the only) difference between Kewpie and other Japanese mayonnaises and American mayonnaises is that Japanese mayonnaise uses only the egg yolks, but American mayonnaise uses both the egg whites and yolks. And yes, another major difference is that Kewpie adds MSG to their mayonnaise. Their mayonnaise made here in the states is labeled as not having MSG, but it does have yeast extract, which takes the place of MSG giving the same effects.

Sorry if I’m preaching to the choir about Kewpie, but I figured there MIGHT be a small chance that among us HOs that there’s a few people whom haven’t yet tried yet it.

I was picturing an avocado half that you jammed shrimp into. Which is a weird image.

I wrote back to Sir Kens–er, Unilever, asking whether Hellmann’s Real Ketchup was a rebranding of Sir Kensington’s. They said no, Hellmann’s doesn’t produce a ketchup (real or otherwise). I sent them the link above, and they verified that the product exists in the UK, but was discontinued in the US.

It really is striking how Heinz has monopolized the market. Four or five shelves of Heinz varieties, with all the other brands crowded into a single shelf.

I’m curious to learn if anyone has tried S. American ketchup. When I lived in Ecuador, it was also used as pizza sauce, and was looser and spiced well. Love to have a bottle here
