Irish in Manhattan

I’m starting a dedicated Irish thread partly because I want to park the Irish Spice Bag article on the Board.

I ate at a lot of Irish pubs and Irish American bars in the 90s, and on some visits to NYC since then.

I don’t have a planned visit.
This is arm chair travelling on my part.

Feel free to add your tips or comments for Irish foods and drinks around town.

not something I have ever heard of before or seen in any irish pub (though its been years since I have been to one) wondering why would it become a thing in a city with chinese restos on virtually every block?

It’s sort of bastardized Irish Chinese, distinct from standard Chinese American or Chinese Canadian food. It might hit the spot for the expat Irish living in NYC and it’s a novelty for people like me.

More chat about Spice Bags here:
The Irish FF snack sensation Spice Bag!

I don’t think Irish Spice Bags will put any Chinese restaurants out of business in NYC, but I can understand 5 or 6 places in NYC offering them.

I am also hoping people will add their favourite Irish pubs, bars and restaurants.

When I lived in NYC a very long time ago, I lived near Turtle Bay, which had a lot of Irish American bars at the time.

I know this requests Manhattan, but the spice bag at I Like Food @ Aunt Ginny’s (Queens/Brooklyn border) is outstanding. Great spicing, perfectly fried, and the curry is sweet gloopy Irish goodness. Only complaint is I wish there were more peppers.

On a more hilarious fusion note, I noticed a spot in the Irish section of the Bronx that was doing a spice bag burrito – Irish-Chinese-Indian-Mexican fusion!

They’re going for the record!

What’s the Indian part?

The Kitchen in the Bronx has the Spice Bag Burritos

@moderator-team & @moderators , could we change the subject line to Irish in NYC?

The Woodlawn section of the Bronx/Yonkers border has lots of great Irish food. Not just restaurants, but delis, markets, butchers and bars. Some of my favorites:

The Butcher’s Fancy McLean Ave. They have quality meats. Irish bacon and sausage, hot food to go, and excellent catering. They are really nice people too.
Irish Coffee Shop McLean Ave. Really good Irish breakfast.
Sean’s Quality Deli Katonah Ave. A good selection of Irish groceries, hot sandwiches, and imported candy from Ireland and England.
Rory Dolans (Mclean Ave), Rambling House (Katonah Ave) and The Heritage (McLean Ave) all have great food and drink.
Just One Tavern, Katonah Ave. A great local bar with a mature crowd. Nothing fancy, but a solid neighborhood place to have a few pints.

If anyone is interested in visiting the neighborhood, message me. I’ve lived in the area for years and am happy to give any advice or recommendations needed.

That’s fascinating! Thank you for sharing!

If we had more time in town next week I’d be curious to check it out

Wow, thank you for the invitation! It’s been at least a year since we visited, so hopefully it won’t be too long until the next one :hugs:

It’s the weird gloopy curry sauce they serve with. Sort of an Irish version of Chinese/Japanese curry from Maggi cubes. They somehow make it sweet.

Rory Dolan’s is always good, sometimes great. They have one of the better Irish breakfasts (served until 3:30 pm) in the area, not to mention the mini soda breads in the bread baskets.

There’s a pub near us that I swear makes their curry sauce with maple syrup.

I like this area too. We had a good (but decidedly non-Irish) meal at Saints and Scholars recently - tasty burgers and nachos. Plus a very good Pink Gin Fizz for me, though I was expecting a bit more creativity from both their food and drink menu given the reviews I read online.

The curry from Ireland via chinese takeaways?

I don’t think there’s a remote hint of indian fusion there, lol. Nor claim of it.

Now I’m wondering if Hakka Irish Spice Box is a thing in Ireland. LOL. Hasn’t made its way across the Pond, yet .

I’ve been to Saints and Scholars. It is a nice place, but not what I would call Irish, really.
The proprietors are awfully nice, and it’s a good “date nite” for the area. They do have a good espresso martini.
