Hot Dogs!

We don’t have Vienna hot dogs here. I remember them from somewhere- probably Chicago :joy:. What I miss now that we don’t have any more kosher delis nearby is buying a rope of natural-casing dogs.

The other night we were at a football match, and there was a choice between sausage and hot dogs, both in white buns and offered with yellow mustard only. I went with sausage. It brought the hot dog experience but with so much more, even with yellow mustard.

Is that mayonnaise and ketchup (curry ketchup?) under the other toppings?

Last time I visted Chicago I went to the factory store a picked up several packages of natural casing Vienna dogs.

Gotta have the snap.

I never see them here in Oregon but I found a local meat market that has a distribution deal so they’re available.
No stores seem to stock them however, so I’m guessing no one knows what they are.
There seems to be no real hot dog culture on the west coast though I keep looking.

The hot dog culture on the West Coast is more of an LA thing.

I just ordered some Feltman’s hot dogs. They showed up one in a Fresh Market near me, and never again. They snapped! Boar’s Head still makes packages of natural casing dogs; I want something a little bigger. The Feltman’s I ordered were 6 to a pound.

A “deli” restaurant near me charges $9.25 for a deli dog. I just looked at their online menu- was thinking about seeing if they sold anything in a deli case rather than just being a restaurant. I did see later that Vienna does ship, but I don’t think my freezer is big enough.

ETA: how Feltman’s was brought back.

You wouldn’t have known that with all the Top Dogs (on Durant in Bezerkeley❤), Casper’s, Kasper’s and Doggie Diners in the SF Bay Area. That was awhile ago, tho. Times have changed.

We have 2 Casper’s and 1 Kasper’s within a two-mile drive of us.

One meat, one veggie, one vegan. All good!

The Doggie Diner heads haunt my nightmares in the best way.

You’ll have to cross over to the dairy state someday. I still buy them. NC dogs are all I buy anymore.

Even so, nothing like NY/NJ or Chicago where hot dogs are ingrained in everyday culture.

Those all make sense except for Dallas. Texas hot dogs. I wonder what they like?
Phoenix is 1/2 people from Chicago.

During the horrible time of Japanese internment, imprisoned people longed for familiar foods but had to make do with limited typical USA ingredients. A sort of stir fry was developed using wedged hot dogs and potatoes, bell peppers, and onions sauced in ketchup, soy sauce, and garlic powder. I am sure there were variations, but that is the one I learned. It was a treat during law school. I grew fond of it and improved my technique. Start the potatoes well before the rest and let the sauce caramelize but not burn.

Sliced hot dogs in fried rice is great; even better if it’s part of the fried rice in omurice.

Total after school comfort food.

You’re right about Phoenix. Upper midwest is well represented down there. When I go to visit my mom in Sun City, it’s like a South Milwaukee multi-class reunion.
