Hot Dogs!

Ah, the memories of Wienie Royal (or Royale, depending on how bougie you want to be)! Wieners split and cut on the diagonal and sliced onions fried together in a little oil and a glug of shoyu to taste, then with beaten eggs poured over and scrambled in. Serve over rice. IIRC, the egg/wiener/onion ratio was generally about 2:2:1, but adjusted based on what you had on hand and what you wanted. JA kids of my generation loved it (and most now consider it a comfort meal), but rarely thought about or even knew of the horrific conditions our parents and grandparents endured while eating it.

Like some of their comments, I wondered why they didn’t sauté a hot dog in butter. I’ve wrapped a refrigerated one in a wet paper towel and nuked it for around 15 sec to get it lukewarm, then split it and finished it in a frypan with butter, works for me. So does an air fryer, if you split or score the hotdog. Finishing it for a minute in the bun in the air fryer works very well.

If you’re in the same desert as my mom, you needn’t cook indoors this time of year. It was cooking hot in Phoenix last week when I was there. Nice to escape to the mountains.

Yes… I’m in that same Desert HEAT (Phoenix-Metro Area).

For some reason the heat really doesn’t bother me like other people, here…

I can’t tell you the number of times Sunshine has exclaimed to me “Why aren’t you sweating??” as she’ll be drenched.

You can’t sweat there. It dries up right now. My mom is like you. Set her thermostat at 94. Our blood hasn’t thinned so, so we ask her to consider 77-78. Pleeeeaaaase, mom! Great shopping options down there. On the other hand, I couldn’t get over the grocery prices at Fry’s and Albertson’s. Sheesh!

I heard a radio story (this particular one was about people dying on pilgrimage to Mecca), where they reported that older people may not feel the effects of heat, but it is affecting them, and then suddenly they are very sick with heatstroke etc.:confounded:

At least 1,300 died!

Heat also is impactful on a straight up cognitive level (adult daughter of Alzheimer’s diagnosed mom).

I read that and was horrified. I’m no show off to heat - whatever the cost. I’m chilling. I know my age and my conditions.

That stuff is no joke. As a native northerner, I didn’t respect when my folks moved to AZ. After going on long hikes, I learned the hard way. But to walk a Hajj pilgrimage, in conditions like that, is unimaginable.

The humidity in ATX is 82%, and the mercury is headed for 98F. It was 80F when I got up at 0500. It is a good day to stay in and be still. The lawn will just have to figure out how to mow itself. As always, this thread makes me want a dog, but I am meeting a friend at La Posada. I am thinking some sort of a taco and a bowl of black beans. I have it narrowed to a puffy beef taco or a taco al pastor. I may wait and see what Homero orders.

Uh, no thank you. That sounds like a very specialized sex toy.

Also, if they have their natural casing, they don’t have these.
