HO Dinners in Philadelphia?

I don’t know how many active posters in Philly we have (they seem to be very quiet… for Philly folx :upside_down_face:), and I can’t recall ever seeing posts about HOs getting together for meals.

Is that a thing? Could it be? I’ll be residing in your faire city in the late summer & fall, and look forward to exploring many more restaurants than I can when I’m only visiting for a few days.

Anyway, just putting out feelers

Don’t forget to check out the SEA Market in FDR park, every weekend through October. I am hoping to go up from DC again this year. Last year I went up with another Chowhound and met a couple of others from Philly as well. I will let you know when we go. Probably August or September.

I spent 4 years visiting my oldest not too long ago. Spoiler Alert: Best Philly Cheesesteak is in a pizzeria, Angelo’s Pizzeria. Still weird to say after John’s Roast Pork being our undisputed fave for many years
Other than that, any of the Salomonov places like Laser Wolf is awesome, and of course Han Dynasty, even though we got plenty of it in NYC.

I know that’s not what you asked but couldnt resist. Its a great food town

Oh, I adore Philly as a food town, and can therefore appreciate your enthusiasm! We’ve been visiting since the early 2000s when the INS had me show up there seemingly every other month (and kick the ladies’ room walls in frustration), and we are there at least a few days every year.

I don’t care much for cheesesteaks TBH, but very much look forward to being near a massive Asian market in Bella Vista & in walking distance to the 9th street Italian market, Passyunk, Viet town, etc.

There are so many places to revist and explore, and it’s always more fun with a group: MOAR foods can be ordered and shared.

@Steve I won’t be there until September, so I’ll def make sure to visit the market. I remember you mentioning it in a previous post.

PS: I’ve walked by Angelo’s many times (a good friend of mine lives nearby) & am always in awe at the lines, although they seem to be mostly for the pizza — which looks pretty damn good, TBF. My friend’s partner absolutely swears by Angelo’s cheesesteak, a fairly recent discovery for him despite having lived in the city for a long time

i might just have to try the cheesesteak if I’m going to be there for a few months. My PIC took me to Jim’s in the early 00s and it was… a’ight. Struck me as drunk food — like currywurst, or dürum döner, or dosas — nothing I would plan a meal around/for.

Who knows, it may well be drunk food when I try it

Every listing for best cheesesteaks in Philly in the last few years has Angelo’s as the best. The secret is out.

If one keeps track of the cheesesteak index

I wouldn’t waste a meal on it for a brief visit.

For those of you who don’t frequent the What’s For Dinner threads, I just posted this about our recent visit to the Southeast Asian Market that @Steve mentioned. We’d definitely be interested in giong back with a bunch of HOs.

I’d be up for an HO trip. I’m in the DC area so easy drive or train ride up.

That would be great. I think I am going to have to start following this thread more actively.

Yay! We already have a bit of a contingent

I was worried about posting this early (I won’t be in Philly until September), but we can def use this thread for planning purposes once the time comes, and if some of you care to get together beforehand — even better!

That may actually work well for me. Right now I can’t commit to anything due to a series of unfortunate medical issues with my left leg and foot (I know you @linguafood are aware of these as you’ve been kind enough to check in on me :hugs:

But by September I may be good enough to go. And the prospect of a HO meet up may even motivate me when my pt finally begins.

Fabulous news! I hope you recover quickly and without any complications, so you can join in on the fun

Oh, I should mention . . .the Phillies are home against the Mets the weekend of Sep 13-15. FDR Park is literally across the road from the sports complex (i.e., the same roads and transit are used for both), so if the visit is that weekend be prepared for godawful traffic. Thankfully the only Eagles home game that month is a Monday nighter.

Is the SEA market every weekend during the summer months? Then we could certainly be flexible & pick a date with no sportsing events. I have another 6 months cancer checkup :roll_eyes:scheduled back home for that Friday, so I may not be in town anyway.

We have time

PS: Apropos Eagles… on our last trip to Philly, a hilarious dude was selling shirts that said “The Eagles Are Playing Like Shit.” My PIC got one :joy:

SEA Market is every weekend, April thru October, at least it was the last time I checked.

From the SEA Market website

When is the Southeast Market in FDR Park open?

The first day of the Market for 2024 is Saturday May 4th. The Market is open Saturdays and Sundays.

We’re closed for Broad Street Run and all Eagles home games. Occasionally 5K Runs (which are scheduled independently from the Market) take place in FDR Park limiting car entry for both vendors and visitors. In this case we delay the Market opening hours. Please check our social media channels on Facebook and Instagram for delay dates and times.

3-day weekends this year include Memorial Day and Labor Day. The Market will extend business hours to include that following Monday, however individual vendor availability may vary:

The last day of the Market this year will be Sunday October 27th 2024.

Now that we are inching towards our move to Philly, I was wondering if anyone would be up for a wandering lunch at the SEA market either SAT 9/7 or SUN 9/8?
