Coronavirus - what to stock up on?

Exactly @LindaWhit, as well as nausea too, anxiety and sleeplessness.

Very good point @small_h. Decades ago, grew some in Colorado, at about 8,000 ft elevation, outside. Extremely short growing season, but it did mature.

In our country county, a tall concealing fence was required by law for all pot patches. Resulted in some really nice fences but then the product brought in good returns.

A friend reminded me that in America, food stamp/WIC recipients get their benefits the first or second day of the month. So unless your need is absolutely urgent, try to avoid supermarkets tomorrow and Thursday:

  1. These folks’ kitchens are running on empty, and
  2. The stores are going to have more customers.

And on a local radio show today, a caller who said he is a truck driver who delivers shipments to supermarkets in New England asked shoppers to wear masks and gloves in grocery stores, because the stock clerks and cashiers are getting sick. According to the caller, managers won’t allow workers to use masks or gloves, because these might frighten customers. He did not mention any chain names or locations, but if this is true, it is unconscionable and we shoppers can at least help by following his suggestion.

In the last few days the stores I frequent have installed plexiglass barriers between customers and cashiers, and they will not bag in your reusable bags from home, nor let them touch the the conveyor thing.

A fence can only do so much, or so I’m told.

Have you considered ordering from Amazon? Sure you will need to order in bulk…

Thanks for that, naf. I don’t know why we hadnt thought of Amazon before.

Quite a number of offers on Amazon - although most are out of stock or have long delivery lead times. But, found a pack of 72 rolls for delivery next week. Probably not very good quality - but we’re having to compromise of food quality, so why not compromise on this a well.

Am experiencing the same with Amazon, as well as sky high prices on things too. $9 for a 10 oz box of Panko bread crumbs, really? Needless to say, I didn’t order. Did get some Dickinson’s Lemon Curd in a 3 pack for a great price however. Should have ordered some lime marmalade (Rose’s) but didn’t think of it when I placed the order. Next time, along with some orange too.

@naf, meant to say I love the packaging on the jams you stocked up on. I bet they’re delicious, too!

We are fortunate that we both have good pensions and can afford to throw money at the issue if need be. But I am very conscious that there are millions of fellow Britons who are not in that position - either being low earners to start with (or receiving social benefits), plus there’s now that vastly increased number put out of work by the virus and really struggling until the new government wage support progreamme kicks in (mid June apparently).

By the by, I used to buy Rose’s lime marmalade. Really like the citrussy sharpness. Then there was a guy selling his own stuff at the farmers market - he used to do a three fruit one - lemon, lime and grapefruit - which is was absolutely delicious. The last two years though, I’ve made my own Seville orange one and, leaving modesty aside, it’s freaking fantastic - sweet, sharp, thick cut rind that still keeps a hint of chew to it.

I’ll have to get your recipe/method for the Seville orange marmalade you make. I’m a jammer, and have always wanted to make my own. I made it once using canned Seville, all ready to go, from Williams Sonoma. The end result was truly pretty awful, and I blame the canned oranges. I do have a bag of limes in the fridge, so if I get enough energy to do it, I may give it a go!! Thanks for the mention.

BTW, I typically make my own curds/butters with great results, but just haven’t had the damn energy, between recovering and not sleeping well due to the Corona nightmare. Praying we see our way through this, and live to look back on it. We’ll all probably have PTSD by then though :joy_cat:, but really, no laughing matter re: the PTSD. It’s a truly awful thing, and very sad

ETA - very happy you’re in a comfortable position to ride this out, as are we. I count my blessings every day, but I am acutely aware so many are going without. Fortunately, we can share as well.

Recipe link below

It’s one of an ongoing series in my daily newspaper, whihc are generally a good read. Felicity Cloake discusses the options she’s found in various cookbooks before coming up with the “perfect” recipe.

Well, it announces to the world that you’re growing pot!

Thanks @Harters - have it bookmarked. Will let you know if I make some, or go with a lime one.

They are very good. The guy has won the title of the “best worker of confiture” in France. I saw on someone’s photo here in a French bakery, I think in California they were selling these Francis Miot jam. Maybe you can find in some shops.

Good! I hope the delivery will be on time.

They’ve been despatched already.

Wow! How come!

No explanation given, and at the time, it was the only kind they had “in stock”.
Toilet Paper - Soft, Comfortable, …Suitable For Daily Use

Maybe in stock meant they had a tree they could make some from. Fortunately I was able to track some down that only required that I wait in line in what I consider to be the wee hours of the morning.

I was pretty scared at the time. Maybe I’ll cancel it…Hmmm. Looks like it shipped with “China Post” two weeks ago.
