Somebody out there made holiday cookies called ‘North Poles’ and ‘South Poles’, I think. They were ‘creme’ filled wafer sticks, maybe 4" long, glazed with either white chocolate flavor (north) or milk chocolate flavor(south) and garnished with sprinkles. We’d find them at the Amish store (dents and expired items) after the holidays. No use stocking up on these, they were gone quickly!
They still are my favorites.
I think they influenced my love of nut based ice cream. Mitchell’s in San Francisco does a nice toasted almond.
This from Jeni’s scratches the itch sometimes.
Russer brand Dutch Loaf or Old Fasioned loaf were my absolute favorite for brown bag lunches when I was a mail carrier. Usually on rye or pumpernickel, with the meat slices encasing some cole slaw, which took the place of straight mayo.
Also the Good Humor bar that was peach ice cream coated in real fruit raspberry sorbet. Might have been called a Peach Melba bar. Gone for probably 60 years. I don’t understand why every big ice cream maker doesn’t have peach ice cream year round. With a raspberry swirl would be ideal but it’s easy to find raspberry sorbet, for DIY bowl.
Giffords in D.C. used to only offer peach ice cream for a few weeks each summer when local peaches were in season. The lines were very long …
(Their Swiss Chocolate was also very good, as I remember)
Gifford’s has been gone for 25 years. The name was purchased by an unrelated ice cream company in another state.
I’ve never been to a casino but know the feel of a big win: in college over 50 yrs ago, I was the only person at the vending machines in the dorm’s basement late one night. Inserted my quarter, and ALL the Tab cans tumbled out. I don’t recall how many, but I held my nightgown like a pouch as I rode the elevator eight floors, carrying as many as I could.
Ha! Those machines! The one I remember with the most dread was the one that dispensed little warm cans of stuff like spaghettios. Pull levers like a cigarette machine.
Slightly more recently, I and a friend went down to OUR dorm basement to get candy from the vending machine. Moments earlier, someone had smashed the glass (maybe the machine ate their money), so all the candy was freeeeeee! We did the same clothing pouch thing as you.
Swiss Miss variety packs that included coffee, egg nog (which I’d never head of at the time, and which was my favorite), strawberry, and vanilla.
Yeah… it comes and goes. However Tillamook makes a Peaches And Cream flavor that seems to be available year round… although I haven’t tried it.
Mine too! Loved loved the almond filling.
I don’t remember those, but I do remember that someone (Good Humor?) made skinny vanilla ice cream pops with raspberry sorbet on the outside. A favorite in our household back in the 1980s.
I learned today that Original Wheat Thins are no longer made. Or rather, they still make them, but they taste absolutely NOTHING like they used to. Sweet particle board. Ugh.
Really? I thought they’ve been Maine-based since inception.
When I see Gifford’s in the stupidmarket, I always stop to see the flavors available. Theyre very good! I love their Moose Tracks and their Old-Fashioned Vanila. Very vanilla-y.
They are, but they were sold in 2010.
I agree! Yech.
I started this thread and I forgot no longer made: See’s chocolated candied ginger and terrone. Both came in dark or milk. Since they were the only See’s candyb I liked…
OK, so Gifford’s of MD was sold to Gifford’s of ME…which is what I’ve been enjoying in New England since I moved here in 1989. Didn’t realize there were 2 companies with the same name.
