The one outside of DC was a Mecca for ice cream lovers. I can attest!
Score!
Entenmann’s Filled Chocolate Chip Crumb Cake.
I haven’t seen it in YEARS in the NYC area. There’s something indescribable about the cream filling–it had a very light chocolate flavor and interesting texture. And the crumb topping had a little crunch to it that balanced everything out.
I find it very hard to locate fat free cottage cheese in the local grocers. I love it with tomatoes or green chile and tomato salsa, but there is a spinach dish I make with it and the others or just don’t do it.
That sounds odd to me. Mom’s a big fan of fat free cottage cheese and I’ve never had a hard time finding it here in SE PA. In fact I just picked up a tub of it this weekend.
I had some in Sept. It was not very peachy, but then nothing can compare with homemade peach ice cream. I would not buy it again.

Thanks, but my nearest Safeway is 52 miles rt.
Yum, that does sound good!
there was a window of time in my teens when i would eat far too many of these (but not for breakfast, mostly after school). i can still recall the after-taste. not good – most likely due to the chocolate quality (or lack thereof). i chalk it up to having a no ‘junk’ food policy in the house, which was annoyingly strict. somehow the clever marketers where able to slip this by my mother’s radar. essentially candy bars (and not good ones).
Oh, lord, I remember those! I think when Mom went back to work full time, she bought some of those as insurance on days when she wasn’t able to fix breakfast for us. The “chocolate” was waxy, and the filling was chalky. Tan chalk coated in brown wax. I really had to be hungry AND lazy to eat one of those!
Were these the spiratual successor to Carnation Instant Breakfast (powder you mixed into a glass of milk)?
i would think so! i remember those as well (and they might still be in production?). i think the bars where created in the 70’s when Carnation realized that stirring powder into a glass of milk was one step too many.
Probably right, and it was before the advent of prepackaged drinks, like Ensure or Boost.
And not too portable when running to catch the bus
The only canned soup I ever really loved. Scotch broth was the only one i ever requested from mom. My kids, as babies, loved Zweiback. Thought I saw them in a store, though.
One I sure don’t miss is Hamdingers…hamburgers made with ham. RIP, mofo.
I picked up a Greek Zwieback at a Greek store in Toronto, to make Karidopita, last week.
I don’t remember seeing fat free cottage cheese. If I find it I’ll try it.
Our regular store used to carry it, but no longer. Sometimes I will luck out at Safeway. If so, I’ll buy two large tubs (cartons). It seems to last a long time, unopened in the fridge.
Anyone who happens to be in Mecca (California) should have lunch at Plaza Garibaldi, It’s really good.
