Cardamom lattes and a kannelbullar at Fika in Kensington
May 9, 225.
$6.83 for an iced latte at Coffee Pocket on Bloor, including a 50 cent surcharge for the ice.
May 8: $6 including a small tip for an iced latte at Poured Coffee on Danforth near Greenwood.
charging for ice? is that something you’ve seen before? i don’t think i have.
I have seen it lately, at around 10 percent of the indie coffee shops I’ve visited.
I’ll be taking photos from now on.
LOL
I came to the realization I don’t like iced latte enough to spend $7 CAD on it. I am okay with spending up to $6 including a small tip for the barista.
I will spend up to 8 bucks on an iced Cardamom Latte or another fancy iced latte, but I’m avoiding sugar right now so it’s mostly plainer espresso drinks in my future.
fascinating. i would have thought that shops would actually encourage more ice (and therefore not charge for it) as it will increase their margins considerably – last i checked coffee was significantly more expensive than water.
prices around here are a bit higher on average i’d say (Bay Area). the average 16oz iced coffee/cold brew runs $5.15 USD. but we do see a .25-.50 discount if you bring in your own vessel.
The same amount of espresso goes into an iced coffee, but the business would be saving money on milk and oat milk, if they sell more iced coffees.
The baristas will probably be making less tips, as cafés add more surcharges.
I think Toronto is oversaturated with coffee shops at the moment so I won’t be surprised if the coffee shops that are raising their prices the quickest and adding the most surcharges start to disappear.
I admitted to a barista last week that I usually choose the cortado because it is still less than $5 most places. Then I usually round up to $6. (I also like the cortado and it has fewer calories than a cappuccino or iced latte, because there’s less milk.)
Interestingly, the Poured Coffee coffee shop on Danforth doesn’t use paper or plastic cups. They give you a washed reused ceramic mug to take with you if you want the coffee to go. You can keep it or return it. I returned mine.
I checked out MADE RITE COFFEE
today. It’s located on the edge of Kensington Market, a block from Toronto Western Hospital. I’ll be back.
Breakfast sandwiches are sold 8 to 12 pm.
I will try the breakfast sandwiches another time.
I liked their BLT ($16) and flat white.

Rooms’ 915 Dupont location is almost like a speakeasy, but it’s packed with hip parents and hip toddlers at 10 am on a Saturday morning.
A very good flat white.
$5.20 for the flat white.
$0.60 fee for ice or oat mylk.

Ooooh sweet potato latte. Hope it’s purple sweet potato.
@rstuart and I met up for coffee talk at Larry’s Back Pocket today. Nice cortados. $3.99 each, which is a better price than most places on Dundas W or College Street. Nice staff.
I also bought a pound of Larry’s Sunday Special coffee beans, for $25.
This sounds like such a nice coffee place. Love the ‘butter tart’ license plate on display.
It’s a nice little shop. They have a second, larger location at 1390 Queen Street West, which I’ll visit next time.
Is the larger location called Larry’s Front Pocket?!?
LOL. I believe it’s called Larry’s Place.
Larry was the owner’s grandfather. The baked goods follow Grandpa Larry’s recipes. The coffee cake looks good. I’m fighting off most of my sugar cravings these days, so I didn’t buy a slice.
Speakeasy is the new/old asthetic this year. Must be in the handbook.
Well done for fighting off your sugar cravings. I tried and failed today. Managed to walk past the pastry display at Bread Addiction (the tiramisu Danish was calling out to me but I thought I can’t justify spending £4.50 on it). Later, dropping into posh supermarket Waitrose they had a bunch of stuff discounted because it had reached the best before date and I succumbed to a pack of 2 cinnamon rolls for £2. We shared them after lunch, warmed in the oven.
Don’t get me wrong. I do still enjoy my sugar. Working at changing some blood work. I seem to finally be making a little progress.
I did enjoy a sweet Vietnamese coffee last night. I managed to skip the candy table (big bowls of candy, pick and choose, enjoy there or take some home, it’s popular at some receptions lately) and cheesecake at my friends’ wedding reception last night.
Good for you. I love sweets, especially chocolate. Now , Turkish delight has become my new addiction. .
