Coffee in Toronto

$5.64 before tax for a cortado at Sam James on Harbord.

I found the staff a little unfriendly today, at both Sam James’ Harbord location and another coffee shop I have frequented a lot over the past 2 years. I’m not naming the other shop because I like one of the baristas who was not there today. I think today’s tone was set by one individual. As someone who has probably stopped by 40 times over 2 years, maybe more, I did not appreciate the attitude.

I will be focusing on the places with the friendlier baristas.

Shout out to Larry’s Back Pocket, Fika, Rustle and Still, and Hamers. The baristas have always been kind and welcoming, even to aging Gen Xers like me.

enjoyed a flat white at Nonna Lia on the patio

and a cortado at Nicaroma, Toronto’s Nicaraguan café.

Both are located in the Oakwood Village. I will be back to both.

another day, another coffee.

Today’s very nice cappuccino was from Bottega Volo inside the Royal Cinema on College Street.

Italian cookies and pastries supplied by Forno Cultura.

Bottega Volo is carrying Au Pies de Cochon’s frozen chicken pot pie right now.

An iced Cardamom Date Latte at Carbonic on Baldwin

I’m a cardamom latte addict. I also like them and order them at Fika, Balzac’s (seasonal), Maha’s, and Arch Café.

Coco’s is closing Jan 31st.

Stop by if you’re near Little Italy before then.

A thoughtful friend who knows I love coffee and trying new bags each time got me this coffee advent calendar this year - each day contains a new coffee type/whole bean in a small container that be used for a pour over or double shot espresso. Had never heard of this roaster from Mississauga before and am blown away by the quality and uniqueness. If you’re into light roasts, they’re strong - I’d say on-par with Subtext, Traffic (MTL), etc.

Have never been to the location and don’t drive, but will be ordering online once I’m done this advent.

Cosmo Café Bar, 398 Spadina Ave

$5.08 including tax for a nice Flat White at
Cosmo on Spadina in Chinatown.

This café is a bit cheaper than most other coffee shops in Kensington Market and Little Italy. Nice staff and a few seats inside.

Current pastries are the usual, almond croissants, Nanaimo bars, etc.

Why are the cold lattes more expensive than the hot lattes ?

Around a third of the indie coffee shops in Toronto charge 50 cents for ice. Because they can, I guess.

I don’t really keep track but I notice the surcharge when I order an iced latte in the summer.

Some charge extra for nut mylks. I think it’s usually the places with a tighter margin or less business that do this.

Nut milks I can understand but normally iced lattes have actually less latte in them (due to the ice) than a hot one

That’s true.

I think the price for an iced latte is a What the Market Will Bear price, not a price based on the logic that ice is cheaper than the milk it’s replacing.

Yes ultimately the market dictates the price over the long run, but it also could be the water bill/labour/maintenance for an ice machine? Just speculating as I try to drill down to the dollars and and cents of the cafe/restaurant biz.

I will ask next time I order an iced latte with an ice surcharge.

I would think different coffee shops use different logic when setting prices

This Cosmo coffee shop charges less for espresso drinks that most, so they might be using a Ryan Air approach. And I am okay with that. One very sweet employee was running the place, efficiently, doing the work of 6 typical Starbucks or Tim Hortons employees. :star_struck:

I followed up, Googs, and ordered the orange mocha at Coco’s . It’s good and the orange is subtle. Not worth the drive from Pickering, but worthwhile if you happen to be nearby

A hot Vietnamese coffee from Rustle and Still. $6.50 after tax.

50 cent surcharge for ice, making a note for reference. 90 cent surcharge for non -dairy milks.

Rustle and Still is open for coffee until 6 pm. ( The kitchen closes earlier, so stop by earlier if you want to eat, as well)

Most coffee shops in Koreatown and the Annex close by 3 or 4 pm.
