Coffee in Toronto

Coco’s on a Tuesday morning. (Much less busy and more my speed). I had a cappuccino and a breakfast sandwich, which came to $14.

I’m not going to blame the Lattes.

I was too generous when other people got married and bought houses when I was in my 20s, 30s and 40s.

Most of my friends who currently own houses, who received nice shower gifts, wedding gifts, and housewarming gifts, and sometimes baby shower gifts and baby gifts, over the years, now want to go Dutch when we meet up. After years of alternating who treats. I guess they don’t want to feel obligated if I treat and they don’t want to treat in the future, and they don’t want to treat so I don’t cut into their current expenses. They also don’t want to exchange birthday gifts or Christmas gifts anymore, which is fine. I’m okay with that. But they’re the ones saying “hey, we don’t need to exchange gifts anymore”, not me. More money for my own indie coffee shop habit, I suppose.

There’s no payback time for the never married apparently. :joy: I’m okay with that, just observing.

Mott 32 prices are outrageous if not obscene IMHO. Is the food really worth it? Thought about treating my dad before I looked at menu but his old world Chinese soul would give me such a harsh lecture for spending that kind of money. :joy:

There are 6 items on Mott 32’s happy hour menu that are $10, fwiw. I bet that’s getting more people inside. The fact they’re set at 10 bucks suggests Mott 32 might not be too busy at dinner. Can Mott 32 morph into a wine bar like Restaurant Pompette morphed into Pompette Vinoteca to maximize the current spending patterns of most people? :joy:

Thank you for the info! My dad would still freak at those prices :joy:

When my friend who knew about Mott 32, (she spends a lot of time in Hong Kong) ,told me about it, I didn’t know anything about Mott 32 or its prices.

I told her about Mott Street in Manhattan’s Chinatown, which she knew nothing about . :joy: I wondered if the name had anything to do with Mott Street in Manhattan. Mott Street in Manhattan is lined with cheap and cheerful restaurants. I bet your dad would approve of Mott Street. That’s where I had my last big Chinese meal in NYC, at Shanghai Deluxe located at 50 Mott Street ,which is not Deluxe like Mott 32. :joy:

I’ve heard of Mott St in NYC. Yes. Dad would probably approve though he’s not keen on travelling these days. He’s over 90!

I wonder if it’s “specialty coffee” or regular coffee brewed … LOL

It’s probably French Press.

My DC ordered an Americano.

This menu is from the lobby bar inside one of the fanciest hotels in Toronto. People usually go to the Shangri La for Afternoon Tea.

I was there for a meeting, and the ventilation. :joy: Tables are set nice and far apart, unlike at my local coffee shop.

There was even a piano being played.

Was the masala chai worth $13?

Not for the tea on its own, if you just want a tea.

It was a whole tea pot, at least 500 ml, and the porcelain was beautiful.

That said, $13 for a masala chai tea and $9 for a coffee, plus tax and tip, in one of the nicest spaces in Toronto, sipping out of a nice tea cup, with piano playing and space between tables, and not being rushed, when you take into consideration a Grande Pumpkin Spice Latte out of a paper cup is running $7, maybe the $13 tea isn’t that bad, for the whole experience that comes with it?

The servers were lovely and there was no pressure to order more. Same kind of lovely experience at Lano at the Ritz Carlton on Saturday afternoon around 4 pm.

Maybe ordering a really expensive coffee at a really fancy hotel is better value than it looks on the surface.

Now with regards the masala chai itself, it was a nice blend. It was steeped with water, and I asked for milk. I started drinking masala chai 30 years ago, and I had started with the type that is steeped in milk. I prefer milky masala chai, but I am aware the Shangri La has a broad selection of fine tea, and it also is not an Indian establishment.

I have just remembered that I am taking my mother to the Shangri La for afternoon tea as part of her week-end celebration for her 80th birthday, so now I am prepared for the bill

It is my favourite Afternoon Tea in Toronto, out of the 3 fancy hotel Afternoon Teas I’ve tried. Much tastier food and better service than the Windsor Arms, and more interesting food than the King Eddy.

I haven’t tried the Ritz Carlton, or Four Seasons.

Now that you’ve elaborated it makes sense $13 is for a pot of tea. Agree that some things are worth the higher price tag … ambience, service etc. Will defintely keep this in mind for a splurge.

I think of it as renting the couch in the lobby at the Shangri La for 2 h.
