And a recent survey on the scone issue. Good to see that in my county, Cheshire, 63% pronounce it to rhyme with “gone”. Presumably the other 37% of folk have emigrated to the northwest from “down south”
Most Americans have only ever heard it pronounced like CONE.
I change my pronunciation depending on who I’m with.
Good tip. And maybe worth translating to the “cream or jam first” conundrum. Just see what the other person does and follow them. ![]()
this is Diplomacy. haha.
RIP Pauline Collins.
Shirley Valentine was when I first heard of Egg and Chips.

I loved that movie!
“Chips and egg” in the film. I had never heard it like that before the film - it’s always been “egg and chips”.
I’ve never known if it was a script writing thing or whether “chips and egg” is a Liverpool thing, so accurately representing what a real life Shirley would say.
I should mention, I changed it to Egg and Chips from Chips and Egg during my edit, because of the recipes. so the first time I heard about it was as Chips and Egg, as in the video clip.
I’m also sometimes confused as to the order of other Eggs Bacon Chips Beans dishes. I think I’ve mentioned before that I was a fan of Russell Davies blog, which led me to try a handful of historic London cafes on my visits between 2004 and 2018.
He calls his order Egg Bacon Chips and Beans
but some people seem to use a different order..
this song uses the same order. Eggs first.
Ah. The inclusion of chips makes this a bit tricky. Bacon, egg and beans would deffo be breakfast. The inclusion of chips would generally make it lunch in a greasy spoon cafe and I don’t think that there’s be a “correct” order.
Although it’s not been updated for a decade, the London Review of Breakfasts used to be a fun read - not least for the punning names of the review writers
Thanks for the link.
Wow. One is really close by (in the US).
