Barbecue near the Oklahoma City Will Rogers Airport

Sorry for the short notice. We’re on a cross country trip from northern California to Orlando. We’ll be staying in Oklahoma City tomorrow night at the Embassy Suites near the Will Rogers Airport. My husband wants barbecue. Any recommendations? We’re not experts! Thanks.

This is the standard roadfood recommendation. Let me work on bbq suggestions.

I haven’t been in OKC in a long time.

Cattlemen’ is very close to the airport. I don’t think they have bbq but they have delicious steaks and “lamb fries”

The only place I;ve been to there in years was Clark Crew. Meh.

The Cattlemen’s is not to be missed.

I’ve reviewed both of those places.

Here’s a list from Trip Advisor: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g51560-c6-Oklahoma_City_Oklahoma.html

I don’t even know where the airport is so I’m not much help.

Do you have an account @ eGullet? Chris Hennes, who is the Operations Director of eG, is in Norman (prof @ OU I think).

The only thing I can remember ever hearing about OK bbq is that they do smoked bologna! I’d want to try that if I ever got up there.

If you’re continuing east on I 40 you should hit a bonanza when you get to Memphis.

A friend recommended Earl’s as did the desk person at the hotel. I guess it is a small local chain. People there were super nice. I got ribs and smoked bologna (I’m a bologna freak) with fried okra and coleslaw as my sides. My husband got the brisket with coleslaw and potato salad. Prices are very reasonable and you get a ton of food. I have to say I didn’t love it. Everything seemed undersalted and underseasoned. The coleslaw had raw onion in it which I really dislike. The okra was great, and the the bologna was okay. Ribs were meh. My husband liked his better than I did. Oh well. Thanks for your thoughts.
On the other hand, tomorrow night we’ll be in Arkansas, and there’s a Waffle House near our hotel. I’ve never been!

I’ve only been to a Waffle House once, several years ago and it was not a great experience but I want to try it again.

Is coleslaw not supposed to have onions?

I’m sure lots of recipes call for onions, I just don’t like it!

It was fine. It was very small (8 booths and a counter) and had a reduced menu. I had eggs over easy, grits, and bacon. It’s good to have tried it. I have a feeling that it’s more appealing in the middle of the night when you’re drunk…
Now I have to decide if I should stop at a Buc-ees for brisket sandwiches and jerky.
(I live north of San Francisco in the land of Whole Foods and organic everything. Trying all of these chains are a real novelty to me!)

Do Buc-ee’s!
Take one for the team.
Their brisket is supposed to be pretty tasty.
We all appreciate your efforts.

I am in awe of Buc-ee’s on many counts, but their brisket is not one of them. It’s serve with an execrable sweet sauce mixed in. I taste it and threw it away. I grant - expect - that the quality may vary a lot from place to place. I certainly hope so.

I haven’t had the brisket sandwich, but I’ve had the pulled pork sandwich and it was delicious. I’ve also had a tuna sandwich there! Lol. I’m always working the candy aisles.
