Here’s to hoping.
As i believe I also replied in that other thread, that is decidedly not how Aldi usually sells their salmon.
G’luck.
I’ve bought their smaller, pre-cut steaks and agree - they’ve always been scaled when in that format.
Gremlins.
YAY/MEH for the seasonal chocolate peanut butter ‘gelato’ no sugar added (but of course, there are other sweeteners).
Picked up this seasonal item on a whim as we hadn’t had frozen treats in the house for a while, and this seemed like a good compromise - or at the very least worth trying, given the price.
If you are sensitive to weird sweetener sources, this may not be for you. It also has other ingredients one may not want to find in ‘gelato.’
You certainly won’t be confusing it with the real deal. But I like that it is not overly sweet, it’s pretty chocolatey, it’s got a nice chewy texture, and a ribbon of peanut butter runs through it.
I’d say it’s between a YAY and a MEH, but here’s someone else’s opinion if ya care.
Some duds.
NAY for the gnocchi stuffed with truffles. The “cheese” stuffing is dry and sour-ish, which does not make for a tasty bite.
I had picked up several of this line of shelf-stable pastas (there’s gnocchi, ravioli, and tortellini each in a few flavors) and had the good sense to put all but one back until I had tried one first.
NAY for the Edam. Doesn’t taste of much, never mind the distinctive flavor of real Edam.
The lack of red wax rind on the wedge should have tipped me off, but it was a desperation purchase (because my usual source of Edam was out of it for the first time ever and I didn’t have time to go to any other specialty cheese places before my trip).
New products seen today, neither of which I purchased - altho I was mighty tempted by the dill pickle fish
but maybe someone else has?
I did pick up Canadian snow crab legs (1.5lbs) for $16.99 for a future treat, and aged Irish cheddar I haven’t tried. Their cheddars are usually pretty good, tho - long as you stay away from the fruit-flavored ones.
I NAY most of their cheeses. They look great, but are often pretty mediocre. I like their (crockstyle) refrigerated pickles, but they are spendy.
They’re always described as virtually identical to TJs, and TJs cheese is great, so I didn’t even think Aldi would be such a cheese dud.
I tend to agree. Plus if there is something you like, it’s probably a special buy that you won’t see again for a long time.
That’s not a term I see very often when talking about Aldi products
I had to think about what other cheese I’ve bought there, and I have to agree. Everyone always says they’re just like TJs, so I never hesitated, but TJs sells regular cheese that they repackage and price a good bit lower than elsewhere, not crappy stuff that’s cheaper because it’s not as good.
Bingo. There are a few relatively good Aldi cheeses - feta in brine, some of the aged cheddars, and one of the bleus – but generally, they’re so so.
How does the Aldi feta compare to TJ’s imported Greek feta (which I love, and which is a staple in our household)?
I get most of my cheeses at TJ’s as well. Aldi does other things better (like pasta, fish, produce).
I don’t really know. They’re both fine. My favorite though is Whole Foods’ 365 feta in brine
The mature Irish cheddar was surprisingly good, but as I’ve mentioned here before I’ve had good luck with the cheddars in general (I buy most other cheese elsewhere).
Mature Irish cheddar YAY. Really very good quality. Too bad it’s just a seasonal thing.
Pub-style beer battered shrimp bites were a big ole NAY. While the batter came out nice n crisp in the air fryer, the filling was weirdly soft & saucy, with no discernible shrimp flavor.
I see the Mature Irish Cheddar year-round. ((We actually prefer the Vintage.,)
I had no idea. I thought it was a special with St. Paddy’s day coming up. Cheddars (and burrata) are pretty much the only cheeses I purchase at Aldi, as I prefer the selection at TJ’s and our local cheesemonger.
Tried the frozen organic mussels today. I’d picked up two boxes bc they are $2.99 each.
Were the mussels the greatest I’ve ever had? Hell no! But for $2.99 / box & having dinner on the table in less than 10 min? That’s a solid YAY!
I made a trio of dipping sauces for them, and it was an incredibly easy weeknight meal.
