Aldi Products Yea/Meh/Nay 2023-2024

That implies that good pimento cheese exists…

I remember good pimento cheese from my school lunch bags–but that was well over a half-century ago and I was around ten years old.

I was forced to eat it as a child and I hated it. I gagged on every bite. Im glad to be dairy intolerant so its no longer up for discussion.

Does anyone know

Yes, only homemade by my friend who grows her own pimentos.

Not seeing anything, @Sfpcp.

I meant to make a comment about finding Coke at Aldi’s but not Pepsi, but it got muddled in my head and I abandoned it. I prefer Pepsi but I’m not a fanatic about it.

Saw this today at our local Aldi - def a product I haven’t seen before, but I’m not currently in the market for dips. Has anyone tried it?

Toom is kind of a foreboding name (close to tomb.)

Or to…toum.

In my eternal search for not-sweet sammich bread, I decided to try the Simply Nature brand thin-sliced seedtastic bread (2g total sugar). I also like that it comes with a lot of seeds, even tho that isn’t necessarily what I was looking for. Toasted up nicely for a shmear & roe afternoon snack :yum:

Upgrade to YAY. It’s grown on me. Nutty, seedy, substantial - especially for thin-sliced. Still detect the added sugar, but that’s apparently unavoidable in the US.

YAY for the lamb breast plates. While I personally wasn’t able to pick up any, get some if you can: they’re actually two rib racks. A member of my local cooking group made this with them

I was at Aldi’s this afternoon and I couldn’t find anchovies. Does anyone out there think that’s weird, (they did have canned oyster but they don’t taste good on a Little Caesars Pizza.)

MEH on their Vintage Irish Cheddar cheese. Had some for a Scooby Snack on original Triscuits.

It was fine, as cheddars go. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy it as I would the Coastal Cheddar (WF) / Seaside Rugged Mature English cheddar (better priced at TJs).

I’ll use the rest of it in a Mac & Cheese.

Aw, that’s a shame. I’ve had a few of their ‘specialty’ cheddars before (I think I mentioned the black pepper one in this very group  ), and liked most of them.

Hope it was a good deal at least!

The “vintage” and the price were what caught my eye and why it jumped into my cart: $3.99. Again, not a bad cheddar. Just not a WOW! cheddar.

Uh, make that a YAYAYYAY. Last bag I opened was am absolute party in my mouf of extra tart pickle brine and superbly kronchy chicharrones. I think it’s just a seasonal item, unfortunately, but I am tempted to go back and see if either branch has any left - only one bag in the basement :scream: :scream: :scream:

I mentioned this (regarding Aldi fresh sides of farmed salmon) in another thread and was suggested it could go here, too (thanks @Miss_belle for the heads-up).

  • Got their salmon fillets tonight because 2 of 3 daughters are visiting and that’s what they asked for, and Aldi salmon (farmed) was a decent price.
  • Why does Aldi sell a 3 pound side of salmon that hasn’t been scaled? I ended up taking my cutting board outside and setting it atop my garbage can to scale it off with the scales flying off into the driveway. Stuff goes every which way, of course.
  • I’ve never before bought salmon that wasn’t already scaled [ETA - or which was clearly labeled as unscaled]. You’d think they’d say that on the package.
  • Unscaled trout, I’m fine with b/c they (the scales) are fine enough they just kind of melt away when you cook it. But [the scales on] a 3 pound slab of salmon?

I think something slipped through QC here.
