Advent Calendars

This looks neat.

It popped up on my Twitter feed.

:joy:

Now more than ever hahahaha. Ha. Xmas village in CC has been up since after Hallowe’en.

Kinda hard to get into the holiday spirit with temps in the 80s — never mind impending doom.

Not that I think this is a good buy (in fact, I think it’s a terrible buy), but as a fan of Bill Penzey and his company, posting here:

Also a fan, but yeah, I looked at this the other day, and it’s certainly a ton of money for what you get.

The trial sized bags (if you buy them alone) are all in the $2-3 range, so… at $2.50/bag, the calendar isn’t that terrible of a deal. I’d propose that a bunch of trial sized bags could be used in a DIY/reusable calendar - and then you’d get to pick which ones you want!

I picked up the Bonne Maman calendar for myself as a treat, and I also bought one for my brother for a gift. We’ll see how it goes.

I got the Bonne Maman calendar. First time. We couldnt start on Dec. 1st so are on day 8. Today is the first jam that we really liked. Bluebery Honey Jam. I googled and there are several recipes for this type of jam on line. Up to now i dont think I will buy again. Jars are cute for spices.

I am on day 10. Am I noticing a lot of blueberry?

B and Spring Onion love Tony’s Chocolonely. We bought a bunch at a shop in Warren RI and I think we recently spotted them in some incongruous shop abroad (Sweden or Norway?).

It’s actually Belgian! We were surprised. One of the first fair trade chocolates in Europe.

Interesting! I just had my Day 6 (since my days were so rudely interrupted from Days 3-10). I’ve pulled out 7 & 8…and my Day 8 is Lemon-Elderflower Spread. I wonder if they’re random as to where they are inserted into the Advent calendar?

My favorite so far has been the Purple Fig- Cinnamon spread (my Day 5). Nice and figgy, just a hint of cinnamon.

So…based on my last post, I finished my Bonne Maman Advent Calendar with today’s breakfast. Appropriate on the last day of the year.

I decided to keep notes on my phone and rate each one, from 1-5 (5 being the highest rated). Each was eaten the same way: toasted English muffin, lightly buttered, and then each half spread with half of the mini jar of fruit spread.

So, whether you care or not, here are my ratings for posterity, as I doubt I’ll buy another one in 2025.

Total in each rating:

5 - 2
4 - 4
3 - 8
2 - 9
1 - 1

(editing this again so the formatting isn’t so wonky)

Day 1 - Quince Spread - mild quince flavor, a bit too much sugar - 2.

Day 2 - Guava Spread - good, a bit of a tang - 3.

Day 3 - Apple-Quince-Honey Spread - a bit chunky (tiny apple pieces?) and surprisingly, not overly sweet. - 3

Day 4 - Orange-Yuzu-Grapefruit Spread - very tangy, less sweet. - 4

Day 5 - Purple Fig-Cinnamon Spread - figgy, just slightly cinnamony, not overly sweet; BEST (so far). - 5

Day 6 - Rhurbarb-Strawberry Spread - typically sweet. Nothing special. - 2

Day 7 - Wild Blueberry-Maple Syrup Spread - VERY tart on its own, almost too tart; no discernible maple flavor at all. - 2

Day 8 - Lemon-Elderflower Spread - light lemon; floral back notes, almost too sweet. - 2

Day 9 - Rhubarb-Spice Spread - too sweet; no spice. - 1

Day 10 - Raspberry-Rose Spread - full on raspberry flavor; light rose scent after. - 3

Day 11 - Apricot-Peach Spread - Very good; not overly sweet. Would buy this in large jar. - 4

Day 12 - Pineapple-Yuzu Spread - pretty bland and unassuming. No discernible pineapple flavor. - 2

Day 13 - 4 Fruits Spread (strawberries, cherries, red and black currants) - ok. Slight tang from the currants. - 3

Day 14 - Mango-Raspberry-Lime Spread - very nice. Slight hint of raspberry at the back; not overly sweet. - 4

Day 15 - Cherry-Pink Peppercorn Spread - just cherry and fruity; would have preferred a more peppery taste using black peppercorns. - 2

Day 16 - Mixed Berries Spread - good, slightly tangy. But typical. - 3

Day 17 - Strawberry-Wild Strawberry Spread - ummm…it’s strawberry. Nothing much to see here. - 2

Day 18 - Caramel Coffee Spread - very good! Caramel forward, with a slight hint of coffee at the back. Wouldn’t want it every day, but a nice change from the fruit spreads. - 5

Day 19 - Cherry-Honey Spread - all cherry, no discernible honey. - 2

Day 20 - White Nectarine-Peach Spread - very good! Subtle nectarine and peach flavor and not heavily sugared. - 4

Day 21 - Pineapple-Passion Fruit Spread - nicely pineapple-y with a couple of chunks of pineapple throughout the spread. - 3

Day 22 - Mirabelle Plum-Linden Blossom Spread - very nice. Slightly floral scent to it. - 3

Day 23 - Apricot-Orange Blossom Spread - good. But typical. - 3

Day 24 - Pear-Cocoa Nibs Spread - cocoa nibs look like gnats suspended in the spread and do absolutely nothing in flavor. So essentially, pear jam with black bugs in it. - 2
