I dunno if that’s a rhetorical question or not, but in short, John Henry Boalt left a sizeable bequest to the UC system so the law school was named for him, but he had some troublingly racist views and the University removed the name in the recent past (last 5-10 years, IIRC).
Yes Boalt was a racist and that was part of the renaming but the rebranding was also about linking the law school to the university in a direct way. Thus “who or where” was a real question because few know who Boalt was, or where it might be. Then you had explain it was in Berkeley.
Well before the name brouhaha over the wife’s bequest, a distinguished alum we met called the alma mater “Bloat”.
Well, I’m not sure that’s wrong!
I am shocked as well by the dearth of Claremont McKenna, Claremont Graduate, University of Washington, or Willamette stuff, too, but I could, as I imagine SUNY alums can, go to the school bookstore or Amazon. But why would I? My Mini convertible is already covered with decals for the blood bank, public radio, the Natural Gardener, golf bags for walking, and my favorite, “No sniveling.” It doesn’t need stags, owls, huskies, or wildcats.
Binghamton campus bookstore probably doesn’t sell a branded griddle…
What a beautiful, heartwarming post!
I agree with you. Couldn’t wait to leave FLL.
At Lair of the Bear, the old Cal alums sit around and tell Stanfurd jokes.
And their skits, too.
Those NIL football schools take themselves too seriously, or not seriously enough. To wit, we knew an alum of a small non-jock powerhouse college who claimed that they rallied the team with: “Kill them ! Maim them !! Tear off their arms and legs !!!” As far as reported, no one got hurt (at least in the stands).
Or University of Florida…“go gators”…good luck finding any of their swag without the “gator” on it. I remember seeing orange and blue mini vans around town there as well.
Still, Stanford athletes turn in stellar performances in Olympic competition–If it were a country it would have placed sixth in overall medal count. This from a school with 5,000 undergrads.
As a product of two Cal alums, I was raised to cast a stink-eye toward all things Stanford, but I can’t deny their standard of excellence across the board, athletic as well as academic.
Ditto.
I agree, but in my estimation Cal and many other universities can say the same.
