2026 costco yay/nay/meh

I think Costco is where I bought a big block of cheddar-Gruyère cheese. YAY. I’ve been using it for grilled cheese sandwiches. I spread bread with mayo, whole grain mustard, little bit of Calabrian chile garlic spread (WF) bit of sweet relish, thin slices of cheese.

I spread mayo in outside of bread (you can sub butter) then put in a little nonstick pan and toast both sides.

Delicious, quick, easy cleanup.

I was skeptical about big blocks of cheese (Romano), thinking it would spoil before I used it up. But I got a big slab of it a few months ago, and cut it into reasonable chunks which I wrapped in Press-n-Seal. I’m finally on the last chunk, and there’s no sign of spoilage. Yay!

I bought some peaches and cream pastries (8 count for $12) the other day. The peach flavor is good, the cream flavor is weak, and the pastries are really hollow. I would not buy them again. A pretty solid “meh”.

MEH for Sheet Pan Vegetables.

I’d read a couple of downright glowing reviews of this product so I was excited to give it a go. Preparing the veg is certainly easy: You put it on a sheet pan (go figure), pop it in the oven for 35 minutes, and that’s that. The mix contains onion, sweet potato, broccoli, brussels sprouts (whole, but luckily petite), and zucchini. It’s supposed to be pre-seasoned, but I think that mostly means pre-oiled. It comes out of the bag with each piece perfectly coated.

Once cooked it was somewhat of a mixed bag (pun intended): The broccoli was perfectly cooked; the sweet potato a bit too tender; the onion decent but slightly charred around the edges; the brussels sprouts very tender but they had a bit of that unpleasantly cabbagey brussels sprout kind of vibe; and the zucchini was straight mush. The pre-seasoning, as mentioned above, was pretty minimal; luckily we ate it with a fairly aggressively seasoned dish – a quick soy/honey chicken – and a bit of that sauce with the veg was enough to make it taste pretty decent.

My take on the output certainly leans negative, but getting some healthy-ish veg on the table with such minimal prep gives this product a bump into middle ground territory for me – thus the overall “meh.” That said, I almost certainly won’t buy this again.

Hmmm - Your yuk (meh) is my yum. This is a product I love and look forward to each winter (not available year round). I like that there’s minimal added flavoring / seasoning. I usually bake in my countertop oven, convection setting and enjoy the various textures of the cooked veggies, including especially the zucchini (non-mush for us).

Thanks for the tip, I’ll try convection for the rest of the bag! Same temp and time? (450F, 35 minutes?)

400 convection 16-20 minutes, stir halfway. I find that “air fryer” instructions on most commercial frozen foods work well for convection, with maybe 1 minute added time.

this is the type of thing that I would season with aleppo pepper and then, at the end put back into the overn with chopped parsley and fresh garlic. And probably salt and a bit of flavorful olive oil. Any lack of flavor is compensated for. But Ithat zucchini would make this a no buy for me.

tried costco prepared mac and cheese for the first time, just wow!!

My Costco now also has a “look alike” - Summers Peak - made in USA. They were sampling it today, baked in their sample oven. Very good, veggies kept shape & texture (including the zucchini). I still like that it’s only mildly seasoned.

They were sampling them at Maplewood costco as well today. I likes the seasoning profile but they were cooked to mush

Which was a bummer. My freezer is pretty full right now but I might try to grab a bag next week when I’m back

Personally I want either unseasoned or fully seasoned. “Mildly” presents a puzzle that I now need to solve.

A big NAY on the Barton’s Kosher for Passover Dark Chocolate Mints: they look as though someone ran over them with tank treads. They’re all cracked and broken and either dried out or messy (thank goodness they are individually wrapped).

YAY Spreadable Irish butter with olive oil and sea salt, good on toast. There was another Irish butter called Truly that I didn’t buy.

My local Costco now carries both salted and unsalted Kerrygold, which makes me very happy.

a meh on the carbone cacio pepe sauce. suprisingly good for a jarred sauce but not all that hard to make the real thing, which is much better. still, for a quick meal, not bad.
